Kate frowned to herself as she took a seat. Class had only just gotten started, and they were already writing paragraphs! Kate didn't like writing that much, but at least it was an easy topic. She took out her quill and a piece of parchment and began to write. Kate Addison
3rd year Ravenclaw
A charm is cast to make changes to things that already exist. There's something we want the object to do that it doesn't already do. We can also change objects to look differently than they did before. Charms are different than transfiguration spells. Transfiguration spells change an object into something else entirely. A charm, like I said before, doesn't change the object into something else, it just changes the objects behaves or looks. I think I'd like to know more about color-changing charms, specifically the Flashing Paint Charm! I think it'd be fun to make things with flashing paint!
WHOA.
This professor moved quickly! Either that, or Kate needed to speed things up. She had literally JUST finished the last word of her paragraph, when the professor started moving on to something else. Kate put her quill away and put on her thinking cap instead.
Now, which charm was this? She raised her hand. "Arresto Momentum," she said, "and I know that once, Harry Potter was knocked off his broom by a team of dementors, and one of the professors used Arresto Momentum to basically save Harry's life." That must have been pretty terrifying...and maybe that as one of the reasons the school didn't have Quidditch anymore. Kate had never actually thought to ask. "Such extreme circumstances Harry Potter went through, but yes, you're correct." Astrid nodded at the Ravenclaw. Text Cut: Evangeline Quote:

"That's Arresto Momentum, she said. "I think it can be used in Quidditch, in case someone falls off their broom. Someone, like the quidditch official, I guess, can use the charm on the falling player so they don't break all their bones when they hit the ground." Evie had been to a quidditch game.. once, though, so she wasn't sure if they actually did that. But it made SENSE, right?
It was almost an embarrassment that Astrid knew hardly anything about the sport considering her family was invested in it, but what the student said made sense. "That would be a great way to use the charm," she agreed. "Lots of injuries would be avoided." Text Cut: Zeke Quote:

He knew this one, he did, it came up in his reading a couple of times, but he'd never tried the charm as of yet. Hand raised, he contributed his response, "Arresto Momentum, Professor... and it could be useful for anything from saving a glass from smashing on the ground to... saving a life from falling from a great height." Yeah, not just brooms but like, treehouses, or like rooftops, from the backs of dragons. The possibilities were endless. "Saving a glass to saving a life. Brilliant!" What a giant waste of time when there were perfectly good drawings to be done, even if they didn't ever look much like she wanted them to.
With her Gryffindor tie on, she was all set for the bravery thing so even though she didn't know the name of the charm Professor Baxter described. She put a hand in the air right away, sitting up straight just to make sure she was seen extra well. "I'm not sure what the spell is actually called but I think it could be useful to save people a whole bunch of pain if they're falling off something big. Then they won't break their heads open or anything like that. That'd be bad." Too bad nobody had taught her this spell before she'd fallen out of that tree, or that time she knocked her mum's favorite vase off the bookshelf when she and Marcel were playing pirates, but she hadn't exactly confessed to that one yet. "Your classmates have mentioned it, remember to take notes," Astrid reminded gently. Notes came in handy. "It could be used for safety, thank you, Miss Kittredge." Text Cut: Colt Quote:

Woah the ten minutes are up because he heard the Professor move on. Man that was fast. He was gonna turn it in after the lesson was over so technically he still had time. He heard her explaining a charm he knew that is designed to slow or stop a falling object. He spoke out at once saying, "Arresto Momentum." What did he know about it? Well like the others have said it can be used to save someone's life but he had another idea. "We know it can help stop objects that are in motion and one example is if a quaffle is pelting right toward your right, you can stop it from getting a concusion." That seemed pretty legit to him. "Stop a quaffle from giving you a concussion, yes!" And ouch. Text Cut: Zander Quote:

As for the next question, though.. Hm. A spell used to stop or slow the fall of an object? HM. HM. He couldn't really--W A I T!! Zander KNEW this one. Zander Adair KNEW this one!! It was in his flashcards for OWLs. Man. If only Quigley knew that he still remembered that stuff he studied for his OWLs. Maybe the old charms Professor would finally be impressed with the seventh year. Sigh. "It's a good spell to know if you've got clumsy friends," Zander Adair may or may not be that friend. Ahem. Heh. "Especially if that friend trips while carrying a plate full of cookies because then you can save the cookies and won't be stuck cleaning chocolate chips off the ground." Save the cookies or the friend? Cookies always won.
... He was only kidding.
(((sort of))) "Saving the cookies!" In her case cinnamon rolls. "And your friend, of course." She added right after. It was a hard decision. Especially if the pastries were fresh out of the oven. Text Cut: Victoria Quote:

As she finished writing, a question popped out, about a charm used to stop or fall in...slow motion. Hmm. It involved a word, she had heard before. EH. Emmm...Momen...Raising her hand, and hoping it was the right answer, "Arresto, to hold, Momentum, movement...yes, Arresto Momentum. Can be used to save a glass from breaking." Nodding, she gulped. "Thank you for putting it that way. Arresto to hold, Momentum as movement." Brilliant child! Text Cut: Reagan Quote:

...and yes, Arresto Momentum! Reagan had hoped they'd be focusing on something more conducive to her personal interests and area of study. You know, helpful to animals and plants, but she supposed if that were the case, they'd be taught in a joint lesson with Herbology or Care of Magical Creatures. Or...well...maybe there were some practical applications...
Raising her hand in a confident manner, Rea continued to beam at Professor Baxter. She seemed like such a nice lady. "Professor, how about if an animal was in danger from falling from extreme heights? Say a bird broke a wing and couldn't get themselves to safety...and they accidentally fell? Oh, and with baby birds, too. They wouldn't have to fly or die..."
Ugh. The vicious cycle that was life. Her heart just broke for them.
Also, it wasn't the least bit alarming...to HER, that her first fear was for the animals. People fell all the time and survived... "That would be tragic!" Astrid touched her hand to her chest. Poor baby birds. "This charm would be extremely helpful in that situation." Text Cut: Ava Quote:

And moving on....
Some people did mention Aresto momentum to slow or stop a falling object. "Can we use that to save someone who's falling from the climbing, Professor?" She raised her hand and asked. Because if it could be, why her parents or big brother didn't use that to save her from falling from the tree a few years ago? "Indeed you can." She smiled at Ava. No more panicking she hoped. What charm could be used to slow or stop a moving object. Ooooh ooooh. Janelle knew that one and her hand flew into the air. "Arresto momentum is the correct spell." Well apparantly everyone else in the class knew the answer too because they all chimed in with their thoughts. As for what the spell could be used for, Janelle had an answer for that too. "The spell could be used if someone fell off of the bridge or if they were falling from the ladder of the treehouse." Extreme examples, yes.......but they could happen. At Hogwarts, anything could happen and the better prepared you were, the better off you would be. "Correct! It can be used to aid someone who's fallen off a bridge or tree-house ladder," Astrid nodded in agreement. Text Cut: David Quote:

Next, he pushed his hair back from his forehead, wiped the small beads of sweat off there, and stuck a random sticker on. This one happened to be green with a bowtie and sunglasses or something, but he didn't really care. HE HAD TO GET INTO CLASS and... trade his house tie with someone??!
All that work trying to find the stupid thing and then he had to give it away. Well, Davie slid into the last available seat, having NO IDEA who he was sitting next to anyway, but he did undo his tie and set it off to the edge. He'd just write this nametag real fast and then do that...
Problem was, uh, they were starting already. Oh man. Davie really really needed to tidy up his dorm when he got out of class later. Maybe he'd be able to learn a new spell here in Charms for tidying? The boy scratched his head with his quill feather and then finished his nametag.
Now to move along to the paragraph about Charms... it was nice of the professor to take their interests into consideration. Davie had LOTS of interests.
So much writing. Luckily, he didn't mind bookish tasts like reading and writing. He loved them, actually. BUT HERE THEY WERE, moving on again already. Geez. Davie needed to get smarter faster, like his classmate Kate. Uh yeah, see, he didn't know this one. But once the older students started chiming in with Arresto Momentum, Davie got an idea of the spell and instantly he thought of its famous use during one of Harry Potter's quidditch matches. Heh, good on whoever had brought that up. He remained quiet for a minute, lightly tapping his cheek with his quill as he tried to think of an instance in which one might use that spell in their daily life...
"If you were carrying all your groceries in one trip, but you fell or started to drop a bag, you could quickly cast the spell to keep your eggs from breaking or your fruit from bruising..." he volunteered quietly.
That was a specific example, sure, but how else could the spell be used? Davie had a follow-up question. "Could you use arresto momentum ON a different spell, professor? Or does it just have to be used on objects? Like if you were dueling someone, and you cast that spell on them... would it cause whatever spell they had sent toward you to slow down? Would it slow the other person down entirely, so they couldn't shoot a bunch of jinxes at you at once, or???"
Save the eggs, of course. The child had a question, though. Astrid listened and nodded in understanding. "The charm is designed to slow or stop the momentum of an object. Trusting Arresto Momentum to slow down a spell can be a risk that can cost you a duel." A risk that even her daring self wouldn't try. She liked to win. "The charm can be used to slow down the other person." Astrid shot him a quick smile. A handy charm to keep in mind. Text Cut: Ellery Quote:

Oh. She forgot her nametag. She affixed it, once she wrote it. "The name was mentioned by your classmates," Astrid remembered. Notes, notes! "It does not freeze the area, it slows or stops the movement of an object." She liked the kid's energy. Text Cut: Aditya Quote:

So... a spell that slowed things down or stop a falling thing. There was only one spell he knew that could do that. Adi raised a hand. ''Arresto Momentum, I think, Professor. The wand movement is just waving the wand.'' He opted not to answer the next question because some of the younger ones were giving pretty great answers already. Besides, why would he hog all the questions? "Correct! Thank you for sharing the wand movement." It was important in order to cast said spell, good thing he remembered. Text Cut: Sophie Quote:

When the professor went along to ask some questions about what was obviously the charm Arresto Momentum, Sophie let herself get distracted by Zander's good looks as the first few of her classmates chimed in with the basics on the spell. She sincerely hoped that wasn't what this whole class was going to be about, as Piers had taught this charm to her and the other seventh years who had been at school all seven years during their very first term, so maybe it was a segue into a similar charm? If not, it was going to be an easy enough class-- but Merlin, the Head Boy's hair was looking extra beautiful today, wasn't it? She wanted to ruffle it. It was probably a good thing he was so far away. His answer about cookies made her smile, though, and she shook her head in good humor. Such a nerd, Zander Adair.
With the basics of the spell covered, Soph went ahead to extend her arm into the air, and offered up her examples, too. "Arresto Momentum can be used... well, I've seen my mum use it against Bouncing Bulbs before to slow 'em down, so unruly plants in herbology can count as one use... 'n Professor Culloden taught us to use it to stop the flow of a potion, like, if it's exploding all over or something, or if it's spilling all over." Practical uses in their every day lives.
Astrid smiled, nodding because, yes! It could be used in other subjects as well. "It is useful in other magical areas, brilliant!" Text Cut: Rory Quote:

He looked up to Professor Baxter. Giving in the parchments?! Ughhh... she'll probably think he's a walking textbook. Maybe he should change what he had written? No. That would be dumb. But, it didn't matter anymore because the class continued. He'll forget about the parchment just as he forgotten about the red tie. And all will be well. "Arresto Momentum," he thought to himself that was the answer. He never conjured the spell, but he obviously read about it. He raised his thin arm, barely above his head, and answered, "W-With a wave of the w-wand, Arresto Momentum, is useful upon any falling object I s-suppose." His voice was cracking... Great. He wasn't the sort of student to answer questions, he usually preferred listening, taking notes and staying silence. Somehow, he wanted to answer the first question. Maybe it was the tie?! Maybe this Gryffindor tie has brought him courage and confidence?! Probably not... it was a foolish and infantile idea. Stupid.
Rory wondered for a moment, could he use a simple levitating charm with great aim of course upon a falling object? The charm itself was easier, so why not? And what if he used Arresto Momentum, upon an object that was descending willingly, such as Hippogriff after a long fly? Hmmm... should he ask these questions? No... he would go straight to library after the lesson, as expected. But a curious look appeared upon his face. "A wave of a wand is necessary, thank you." It made her glad they didn't forget about wand movements. Text Cut: Owen Quote:

The Professor was asking a question...which made Owen's grin fall a bit. A charm that could slow or stop a falling object? He...had no idea. So the young badger stayed silent and listened to what her peers knew about the charm in question.
It didn't last long though, because he got an answer for the next question. Owen raised his hand and said, "For the extreme situations scenario, I think it can be used to prevent a falling chandelier from splatting a crowd of people under, Professor maa'm! And for every day use..." Hmm. Where and when could he be possibly use that kind of charm? ...Oh! "I think it would be helpful for people who are especially careless and clumsy. You know, because they tend to cause things to fall accidentally...like their hand mirror, or a bowl of cereal." Nod nod.
Falling chandelier? Why would a chandelier fall? That was dangerous. Where were the elves? This was an excellent extreme scenario. Astrid nodded. "That would be awful, but you are right. It can prevent a falling chandelier from hurting others. As well as helping the less coordinated." Ahem, ahem. Text Cut: Blaise Quote:

In the background his quill still scribbled on the notepad that floated next to him but as suggested, his actual notes were being taken with a regular, old fashion one.
If possible, his face might have sunk more when he realize they would be learning the opposite of the charm he was most interested in. This was simply not his lesson, was it? Naturally he didn't know the answer either but by now enough of his classmates had said it for him to get the right idea and so he scribbled down 'Arresto Momentum' as they had said but he didn't think she needed a million and one people saying the same thing so he would go with it's use--what little there was that he could see. "If there's only one cookie left and both you AND your little sister want it, you can make her slow then run ahead to snatch it." Not something Julie would appreciate but she would do the same if given half the chance he was sure. "Get to the last cookie!" Astrid agreed with this so much. Sabbath took out a fresh sheet of parchment to address the professors first question
Sabbath looked down at his tie, he hadn't yet managed to swap it with anyone. He mused that if he'd known the charm required, it would have been much more savvy to just change its colour. Just then the professor had asked another question
Sabbath could certainly see how a charm like this could be very useful, especially if one had dark enemies. Sabbath looked thoughful and raised his hand "Professor, can I ask a question? Does the moving object have to be falling downwards, or can it also be stopped from moving sideways - lets say, just hypothetically, if someone were to throw a knife a person"
Oh my. What a question. "It doesn't have to be specifically falling, the charm will slow or stop the movement of an object." Pause. "Fortunately we only deal with wands and magic at Hogwarts," she added. So no need to worry. Text Cut: Yoongi Quote:

He sighed as he looked at the tie on his desk and then turned his attention to the Professor when she asked the next question. He raised his hand in the air "Arresto Momentum, Professor. It can be used when you fall off the cart in the gringotts caves" ....what? ..it could right? have they all seen how HIGH UP those tracks were? What if a cart suddenly..flipped or something? "Or you can use it as a game, like dropping two stones from a tower and then cast the spell and the stone that lands last wins"
So it was a lifesaver game and a fun game.
Fall off the cart at Gringotts? Oh Merlin. Astrid kept her amusement at that thought to herself. "It would make for a painful fall." Nod, nod. "It can also be used for games, clever!" Text Cut: Phillip Quote:

Shrug.
He was going to ignore the question about what the spell WAS since people had answered it already and try to concentrate on the next bit: how it can be used in everyday circumstances. To save people's lives? Yeah. To stop something expensive from dropping on the floor and saving yourself from being shouted at by your mum? Yeah.
Oh! OH HEY! His hand went UP in the air and he started waving it around a little. HEY PROFESSOR LADY? "If you're trying to sneak around someone's room and you don't want them to know, you can use that spell if you ACCIDENTALLY knock something over. Something that would make a lot of noise and give away your cover." Not that he did things like that. Sneak around people's rooms.

After listening to the questions and thinking for a minute, he raised his hand. "Professor, I don't remember the incantation for the spell really but the last part of your question reminded me of an extreme situation to use the spell. My aunt and uncle were over at me and my mom's house and one of my baby cousins had somehow gotten on top of the kitchen counter after some Honeyduke's fudge that we had gotten for Christmas from my Gran. I hadn't eaten it because it had almonds in it and I don't really like almonds--but that's beside the point. Umm, well he fell off the counter but thankfully my mom had just come in to the kitchen with a bunch of dishes levitating in front of her and she used the spell to catch him."
A bit off topic at first but he got there.
He didn't like almonds? She loves almonds...unfortunately she's allergic to them. "That is an extreme situation." Scary too. "I'm glad your mum was there to catch him on time." "Wonderful!" Her students were a clever bunch. With a wave of her wand the name of the charm, wand movement and effect was written. "Today we will be studying two charms which will play out for our activity in just a few moments." She had a feeling there were going to be more frowny faces, but that was okay. It was the beginning of the term, the lessons were only going to grow more challenging. "The next charm we'll be looking at is the Banishing Charm." Her gaze roamed around the room as the spell was written by an invisible entity behind her. "I'm sure you're all tired of sitting down so I will go over it and then we can jump into the next step." Eyes to you quiet ones. "The Banishing Charm does exactly what the name says; it banishes things, sends them away." Clear? Clear. "While Arresto Momentum is the incantation for its spell, the Banishing Charm has its own. Depulso." She paused as it was written on the board. "Everyone repeat after me, de-puhl-so."
Astrid waited for them to do so, and after they did she continued. "It's wand movement is a simple sweep of your wand." She demonstrated, casting the charm silently and sweeping her wand at the quill on her desk, sending it away to her office. Quote:
