"Well," he responded finally, "at least you'll never lose points for talking out of turn." He smiled a little at the boy, even though he was thinking of how frustrating it must be to not talk whenever you wanted to, and how maybe Daxton wouldn't be able to show how smart he is in class because he'll probably never raise his hand.
But those were thoughts for another time, if they got to know each other better. "Did you have more questions about Hogwarts?" David asked instead, thinking that if not, he might head down to the food trolley. For a moment, Daxton wondered whether or not that was supposed to be a joke, and one at his expense, too. He had a hard time picking up on such things, and almost always missed them. But after spending the last four years in a school where the other children made it fairly obvious that they were laughing at him, it had become his default to be suspicious. Not because he found it upsetting, but because it never took long for a that to turn into something more sinister, so it was always smart to be on guard.
Daxton eyed David Truebridge for a moment. The smile could mean anything; he didn't know if it was a mocking smile or just a happy smile, or if this boy was just one of those people where that was just their face. It was frustrating, not being able to tell, but hardly an unfamiliar feeling.
He did have more questions, as it happened, but Daxton didn't want to seem like he was relying on David Truebridge for anything. The likelihood was that he could find more out eventually, and until then he had what was currently the most valuable thing to him; information about the Sorting.
So he shook his head, his expression impassive once again, and went back to inspecting the liquorice wand once again without so much as 'thank you' for the information David Truebridge had provided.
