He tilted his head at the last question, which almost sounded like a riddle. "In theory there's a way to trap a ghost, in a runic circle, with some ancient spells... but I've never done it." And he didn't have much of an interest in doing so, to be honest. Davie had to know, though, since he was giving out all this information: "Why don't you like talking out loud, Daxton?" Davie was a nice kid, a friendly kid. He wasn't loud or obtuse. He could be easy to talk to, instead of just listen to.

Daxton mulled over that for a moment. Pride and glory, more things that were completely lost on him. He'd never had or achieved anything he felt was worth bragging about either, so, again, another thing that didn't make much sense to him. The fact that those things, along with winning a shared trophy, were the only incentives for winning points... well, it was baffling. Unless the points were the incentive, but that was even stranger still. It was intriguing; something else to think on later.

Rolling both the liquorice wand and his pen between his palms, Daxton began to think quite seriously about the ghost trap idea. He was just wondering how something like that might work, logistically speaking, when David Truebridge's question caught his attention.

It was a question he'd heard dozens of times, which meant he already had a page in his notebook with the full answer written out. But it was an answer he very rarely chose to provide, as it tended to prompt annoying comments and stupid questions from people who didn't understand. Last time that happened, the person Daxton was talking to ended up getting smacked around the head with the notebook. Not out of anger, but as a last resort to try to get the kid to leave him alone. It had worked.

Continuing on the current page, Daxton wrote the next message and turned the notebook around for the other boy to read.

'Something in my brain doesn't let me talk to people. If I want to say something, I write it. I can communicate using my hands, but most people don't understand it.'

Daxton eyed David Truebridge carefully. He thought him smart, yes, but didn't expect him to know something as specific as sign language. He tended not to expect it of anyone, as life was much less disappointing when he lowered his expectations of those around him.
