SPOILER!!: DAVIE

He was a terrible flyer himself; flying just didn't seem natural since he didn't have feathers and brooms were terribly rickety and thin. Plus most quidditch players had big egos and tiny brains.

But Hogwarts, he could talk about that school all day. "Daxton," he read the name aloud, "it's nice to meet you. So, you want to talk about Hogwarts." Or, rather, listen to him talk about Hogwarts. Huh. Davie had never had such a captive audience before, nor had he ever given a lecture. But since both Truebridges were former professors, giving a talk about a subject he was an expert on seemed to come naturally to him.

"As I'm sure you've read, Hogwarts was established by the four founders, each of whom put characteristics of their favored students into a hat. The hat is pretty cool, actually, I mean, literally cool, when you put it on. I've tried it before but it wouldn't tell me which House I was suited to. Anyway, that's the first thing you do when you get to Hogwarts: you try on the Sorting Hat in front of everyone, talk to it a bit in your head, because it can read your thoughts, and then you go and sit at the table it directs you to. These people are your new Housemates. You try to earn points in classes for your House, and the House that earns the most points at the end of the term gets the House cup. It gets REALLY competitive some years." Or so he'd heard.

Davie took a breath to see if his audience seemed interested, bored, or neither by the topic of Houses. "So far I've only met Ravenclaws who already go to Hogwarts." These 'Claws being Kyroh and Kate. "I think they're smart. The Head of Ravenclaw is the school librarian, so most Ravenclaws must like to read." Right? Wouldn't that make sense? "I hear Hufflepuff is the House for well-rounded people, or ones that don't stick out as ambitious or brave or brainy. My mum is a Hufflepuff, and honestly she's like all of those," except brave. "My dad is a Slytherin. That House is full of purebloods, they say, and people who really care about heritage and pride and tradition and all that junk." Obviously Davie could care less for those things. "The Snake Head of House is the School Healer, and she is STRICT. She also has no sense of humor and she's very bossy. Just so you know, it's hard to stay on her good side." Again, this was all hearsay from his mother the former Headmistress, and a few things from his dad the former Slytherin Head of House (however briefly).

So, what else did Daxton want to know? "I don't know a lot about Gryffindors," he informed the other boy, tapping his chin slowly as he though, "but I heard their Head is a nut. Nutty about astro...astrology? Astronomy? One of those two." He also had a pet rock his mum liked to make fun of, but Davie was definitely NOT going to tell Daxton a story about that. "Um, each House has a ghost too, and they can float through walls and poke students who aren't studying and if one passes through you, by accident or on purpose, it feels like somebody just dumped a bucket of ice water on your head." In case he thought of trying that out of curiosity. It was NOT as fun as it looked.

At first, Daxton didn't respond in any obvious way; David Truebridge's phrasing had been confusing and slightly redundant. For one thing, Daxton didn't want to talk about anything, because he couldn't, and also he probably wouldn't want to even if he could. For another, they had already established that Hogwarts was the topic of interest. So he just waited.

And waiting paid off. It turned out that David Truebridge was easily the most useful person Daxton had encountered so far. He was the first to go into any real depth about the Houses, and the first to reveal that trying on the Sorting Hat was done while sat in front of everyone. Just the thought of that sent a ripple of terror through Daxton; he hated being the centre of attention, though it happened a lot more often than he liked. This news gave him time to prepare himself, or to find a way around the matter. If he were a politer boy, more concerned with what was socially appropriate, he might have thanked David Truebridge for that.

The rest of it was all very interesting, and there was a lot of information, but Daxton had an extremely reliable memory and so simply filed it all away to mull over later, especially all that about the Slytherin Head of House, in case he ended up there. Daxton supposed it didn't matter what he knew about the Houses; theoretically, he should be placed in the House that suited him best no matter what he knew about them. But he still wanted to know as much as he could. Knowledge, after all, was power.

The way David Truebridge told it, it sounded like Daxton was most fitted for Ravenclaw. He was smart, and he knew it, and he liked to read more than anything in the world. He had actually already read through his History textbook and mentally worked out profiles of famous witches and wizards and attempted to work out some sort of correlation between the houses they were sorted into and common traits that kept appearing. According to that, he fitted in with Slytherin wizards as well as Ravenclaws too, and a couple of Gryffindors. But it was all very vague work, and based on his incredibly limited resources, and he wasn't going to share all of that right now because it would take too much time. Also, it sounded like a lot of his deductions were wrong, because what he was hearing now about Slytherin didn't match up for him at all. He didn't much fancy sharing a theory where he risked turning out to be totally wrong, and looking like an idiot.

No, instead, Daxton went back to the page where he'd written his last message to David Truebridge, quickly but neatly added more to it, and turned the notebook back to him again.

'Astronomy. His name is Airey Flamsteed. I met him. He came to my house when I turned eleven. He is a nut.

What do you get if you win points? Trophies are boring, especially if you have to share with everyone. Do you get anything else? Do you lose points too? What happens to you if you do?

Do you know how to catch a ghost?'
