So probably the latter, but a boy could dream.
He stopped in his tracks noticing that Sophie had come to a halt, turning so that she was facing him. It was only then that he realized how red her eyes looked. Merlin, Toby. He had been so wrapped up in his own worries, that he hadn’t even stopped to see how Soph was doing after parting ways with the older boy. Oops. And yet the Ravenclaw was able to go on and give Zander Adair the pump up speech he needed, whilst also taking care of the badge (because what if he put it on crooked again). It only brought him back to the moment over the summer when he had told Sophie the news. He was most definitely doubtful then too. But somehow Sophie Brown always knew exactly what to say. Probably why she got Head Girl tbh. ”Thanks, Sophie,” the Gryffindor gave her a small smile as he straightened his back and lifted his head just a little bit. So maybe he didn’t have all the confidence he needed right now. And MAYBE he knew he was probably going to screw this whole thing up in the matter of a few weeks, but what was important now was that Sophie Brown, Head Girl, believed in him. And they got to take on the world together. He wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. That alone was enough to make him feel loads better and it was also enough to make the badge feel loads lighter too. ”And you know, that goes for you too,” he reached his hand over to meet hers half way, where he interlaced his fingers with hers and gave her hand a light squeeze. ”You’ve got me by your side too, Soph.” He gave her a small, but reassuring grin, ”You haven’t got to go through this alone.” He was talking about a lot of things here. But mostly, he meant she didn’t have to get through it alone even though Toby wasn’t here.
Already he felt a little more confident as a result of standing with Sophie Brown. But of course these things don’t just happen overnight… Or over a conversation in the middle of the train aisle. Hogsmeade wasn’t built in a day, after all. So what does one do in this situation? That’s right, kiddos. Zander Adair was gonna fake it till he made it. And with that being said, ”You think we should let the Prefects know who their Heads are?” He was finally ready to go face the world or um, the Prefects well as ready as he’d ever be, if she was. Sophie could SEE the visible change in his demeanor after she worked at inflating his confidence levels and it was a very, very big relief. It would have been okay if he hadn't been COMPLETELY sure of himself in taking on this big role... but a little bit of confidence was probably necessary, wasn't it? If the dashing young man standing before her couldn't believe in himself and own it, then the student body wouldn't believe it either. He had to sell it. Especially considering the fact that the vast majority of their classmates seemed to think of Zander as silly or airheaded. This wasn't the case at all, didn't they know? Zander was brilliant and wise and charming and sweet and yes, funny, but SO much more than that. Definitely not airheaded. He was someone worth looking up to, and she knew it, and the professors must've known it - so it was about time that he knew it and their classmates could follow suit, too.
This moment, this train ride, was his first opportunity to show the world what Zander Adair was made of.
Squeezing the Head Boy's hand back, Sophie returned the smile halfheartedly. It was nice that he was trying to reassure her, but she didn't want to hear it. It was better right now in the face of setting the tone for the entire term to push aside any negative emotions and focus on feeling good ones. She was grateful that he went right along to suggest they head into the prefects' compartment so she didn't have to respond to his words, and nodded her agreement, already guiding them the rest of the way down the corridor toward their destination.
"Yeah, but y'should lead the way inside. Y'deserve to get the jaw-drops and the brunt of the massive elation and energy that's gonna come from the room when people see that you're Head Boy." Her dreams were irrelevant - the real story here was that this boy who so many had underestimated was Head Boy, and he deserved to be drowned in congratulatory exclamations just to prove to him that he WAS worthy of this new badge.
And also she wanted to hide her post-crying face behind him as long as possible.
