The pair, close in age, were inseparable at home, and Tabby had hopes it would be the same at Hogwarts. She was wishing with all her heart that Ruby would be a Slytherin, but she had an inkling that hat wouldn't agree that the little brunette had the traits of a Snake. A hatstall herself, the hat had lingered over Slytherin and Gryffindor, eventually placing her in the very house her parents had been in. Maybe she had unwittingly swayed it herself with that very thought going through her head..
She wrapped a skinny arm around her little sister when she saw the tears, her own eyes stinging too as she focused on her parents. Her dad looked so saaad, despite him pretending (and she could TELL he was pretending!) to smile, and wave. He looked paler than ever, with an upset looking Trixie standing beside him. They were getting smaller and smaller.. and smaller and smaller and smaaaller as the train pulled out of Platform Nine and Three Quarters. It had a melancholy aptness about it. She sniffed, focusing on Daniel who was being his usual ANNOYING self. She couldn't even seee Isaac.
She hid her tears when her sister turned to look at her.
Strong Tabby.
Big sister Tabby. “Of course I'll look after you, Ruby.” She reasurred her sister once again, like it was the silliest request ever in the history of ever. “I promise.” She added, unravelling herself to offer Ruby her little finger. “Pinky promise.” Tabitha was more than a sister to Ruby, she was her best friend, her support, her shoulder to cry on and someone to protect her when she needed it. Ruby didn't like change, she liked order and familiarity just like her father. She craved the knowledge that the school would provide her but feared the unknown. Hogwarts could either give her the best years of her life or leave her wanting to go home. She knew that in a couple of years time her cousins would start joining her at the school, followed by her brothers. It would be a family affair and she’d have all the support she needed. In fact it was she that would have to provide the comfort to the younger ones. Felix would be first and he was even shyer than herself sometimes.
They were barely making their way out of London but Ruby already missed her father’s bony cuddles and her mother’s kind words. She even missed her brothers playing up for her parents. She snuggled closer to Tabby as she pushed those thoughts out of her head and tried to look forward to what was to come.
She held out her pinky in return and wrapped it around the blondes finger. “Sisters first. Everyone else second” she spoke although it came out as more of a question than a statement. Ruby would be devastated if Tabby found someone she liked more than Ruby but she wasn't the sort to retaliate against it. She had noticed her sisters tears but also noted how quickly she had tried to hide them. Tabby was the best big sister that a girl could ask for.
Ruby knew that she lacked in the criteria for Slytherin and so she would have to get used to being all alone. Even if she begged the sorting hat to put her there once she was in she knew that she’d find it intimidating. She wouldn't fit in to the house of the snakes, her father had even said that he didn't feel he belonged to Slytherin when he was there. But out of the common room Ruby would stay firmly by her older sisters side.
She glanced at Tabby’s cat whom was mewing in the cage. She stuck her fingers through the bars to tickle its little nose. Her owl was sat proudly on his post, watching over the sisters like he was their protector. “It's such a shame we couldn't bring Aslan and Oink” she attempted a little giggle. The family had so many pets but Aslan the Pygmy goat was her own and she had a special bond with the tricoloured male. Alas a goat was not on the list for recommended pets and she was sure it would be far too difficult to use one in transfiguration or even to get them on the train.
