He may not have been emotionally compromised over embarking on their last train ride for the beginning of a Hogwarts term, but SHE was, and the pain from that was amplified by the cold hard truth that she was leaving Tobes behind. And really, the reality was that she had plenty of friends still at Hogwarts with her. Lots of friends to hang out with and fill the time that she'd have normally spent with Tobes. But... no one could take Tobes' place in her heart. No one. And facing a new school year without Tobias Fuller-Thompson by her side for the first time since her second term was a very, very frightening concept.
What was she supposed to do without him?
The gift of a shiny new badge helped, she supposed, as she and Zander made their way through the train with their respective Head badges and she felt a sense of... belonging and empowerment. Even though she knew that Tobes wouldn't be embarking with her on the journey to Hogwarts this term, the Head Girl badge on her chest gave her a sense of purpose. This was where she needed to be, here with her boyfriend and Head Boy as student leaders to set a good example for others and be people their peers could look up to. It was what she'd always wanted, ever since she was a first year - to be a prefect, to be someone, to prove her worth in a concrete way to her fellow students, her professors, and to herself. And she'd done it.
It was that very thought that made traces of a smile appear in the corner's of Sophie Brown's mouth as they walked along, despite the complete mess that was her complexion after bawling her eyes out on the platform. She didn't feel great, not yet at least, but deep down, she knew this was it: she was living her DREAM. This was everything she'd ever hoped for.
...Well, the only thing that could've made it better was the presence of Tobes, yes, but he wasn't there. Zander was, though, and she gave the Gryffindor's arm a squeeze as she focused back in on just how happy she really was to be here with him. Zander was different from Tobes and she felt very different things for both of them, but Zander's presence on its own was just as encouraging as Tobes' could've ever been.
But that didn't stop her from wanting both of them and DOUBLE the encouragement.
"Hm?" the Head Girl responded distractedly, tilting her head and tucking her long dark hair behind an ear to take a proper look at the Head Boy and his badge beside her. A full, wide smile graced her features then, and she opened her mouth to respond to his questions... but then he was taking the badge off and Sophie sighed in good humor. How cute was he when he was this nervous, huh? The cutest, honestly.
Sophie stopped them on their voyage and turned the Gryffindor to face her before delicately taking the badge from his palm. "You're TOTALLY overreacting, it looked fiiiiine," she reassured him before brushing at the fabric on his chest where she fully intended to attach the badge for him, giving him a silent warning that she was going to do so. "This badge was made for you, Head Boy Zander Adair." She huffed some hot air on the badge before polishing it on her sleeve, then began to attach it to his chest. "It looks good on you, they made no mistake, it's a Gryffindor Head Boy badge, and there's no way they messed that up. This is yours. You're Head Boy. Botros 'n Flammy 'n all the others, they believe in you, 'n I believe in you, so s'about time y'start believing in yourself."
With the badge attached to his chest, she reached up and gave his blond hair a playful ruffle and grinned a big ol' toothy smile at him. He was going to be OKAY. "You've got nothin' to worry 'bout. And if somethin' comes your way that y'don't think y'can handle, well..." shrug, "'least you've got me by your side, don'tcha? We get to take on the world together." A light boop of his nose with her index finger accentuated her final word with a giddy smile, and she reached for his hand to hold reassuringly.
Merlin, this badge was weighing down his hand. Well of course it was only a small piece of metal, yet everything it stood for made Zander’s arm hurt. And the longer he’d keep it in his hand, the heavier it’d get. This definitely had to be some kind of strange magic or something. That or it was all in his head. So probably the latter, but a boy could dream.
He stopped in his tracks noticing that Sophie had come to a halt, turning so that she was facing him. It was only then that he realized how red her eyes looked. Merlin, Toby. He had been so wrapped up in his own worries, that he hadn’t even stopped to see how Soph was doing after parting ways with the older boy. Oops. And yet the Ravenclaw was able to go on and give Zander Adair the pump up speech he needed, whilst also taking care of the badge (because what if he put it on crooked again). It only brought him back to the moment over the summer when he had told Sophie the news. He was most definitely doubtful then too. But somehow Sophie Brown always knew exactly what to say. Probably why she got Head Girl tbh. ”Thanks, Sophie,” the Gryffindor gave her a small smile as he straightened his back and lifted his head just a little bit. So maybe he didn’t have all the confidence he needed right now. And MAYBE he knew he was probably going to screw this whole thing up in the matter of a few weeks, but what was important now was that Sophie Brown, Head Girl, believed in him. And they got to take on the world together. He wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. That alone was enough to make him feel loads better and it was also enough to make the badge feel loads lighter too. ”And you know, that goes for you too,” he reached his hand over to meet hers half way, where he interlaced his fingers with hers and gave her hand a light squeeze. ”You’ve got me by your side too, Soph.” He gave her a small, but reassuring grin, ”You haven’t got to go through this alone.” He was talking about a lot of things here. But mostly, he meant she didn’t have to get through it alone even though Toby wasn’t here.
Already he felt a little more confident as a result of standing with Sophie Brown. But of course these things don’t just happen overnight… Or over a conversation in the middle of the train aisle. Hogsmeade wasn’t built in a day, after all. So what does one do in this situation? That’s right, kiddos. Zander Adair was gonna fake it till he made it. And with that being said, ”You think we should let the Prefects know who their Heads are?” He was finally ready to go face the world or um, the Prefects well as ready as he’d ever be, if she was.
