Eyes trained on the spectrespecs, Maddie cracked a smile. "I think I'll get Benny spectrespecs, too. Mostly because I think it'll confuse him and picturing his expression makes me very happy."

It wasn't as if there were specific things that were making Thornton sad any more. It was just his sort of default orientation, so it wasn't so much sadness as it was melancholy. And it had been going on so long that... it was hardly recognizable to the boy.

He listened carefully to her reasoning, his forehead wrinkling slightly "You don't have to do anything for Mairwen to like you...." he said, turning the spectrespecs over in his hand thoughtfully. "But if you're sure..." It would be rude to refuse a gift. "You should pick the one to send. Something good for a beginner."

It took a moment for Thornton to realize that he was just watching her smile and he internally kicked himself. "That seems like a good reason to get them, then."
