| elephant-astic•wanderlust•stay in the ninedaaays the original Taco Belle•look at the flowers✿ Moxley found herself leaning against Tiara’s desk, listening intently to the students. She was less surprised that this lot would be familiar with cell phones as muggles seemed glued to them these days, given all they could be used for. Made for a discussion lots of students could take part in, which she loved. SPOILER!!: Make and Model limitations Quote:

And what were the negatives of cell phones?
Welllllll.... there were many.
Hand raised, he answered with ONE of his many many ideas. "You need to keep it charged, Professor. Because once the battery goes flat then it's dead and you can't use it anymore. And the more you use it the quicker it runs out." Quote:

Ego boost. Mood boost. Yes yes yes.
... No. Because now they were talking about the NEGATIVES and Toby DID NOT DO NEGATIVITY SO???????????????
He deflated visibly, and twirled his quill around his fingers a couple of times while he chewed at his lip. Eventually, though, Toby did raise his hand. "They're fragile. Sometimes they break super easily at the slightest drop, or the screens smash, or water gets to them... something like that, y'know?" That was the best he could do without going all super negative. Now they could move back on to positive things again, yes? Quote:

Phones! "Well--" she began as she raised her hand. "If the phone isn't charged--it doesn't WORK. You need to have BATTERY life and whatnot--so if your phone goes dead, and you have a to depend on in your phone, it kinda'...well, it majorly blows." She said with a shrug.
Woe is the person with 5% battery left. There was nothing worse than seeing the little red empty battery on your dude, nope. Eden could attest to that. Quote:

Zhenya didn't really understand what Professor Moxley was saying about what cells actually were in relation to the phones, so she wrote down a dot point so that she knew to come back later to study it. And was that Adi's laugh she heard? Zhenya turned to look at him, wondering who he was laughing at. Was it her? Why was he laughing at her? She pretended to give him evil eyes, but the smile gave away her seriousness.
Once Professor Moxley had finished responding to everyone, she explained how the voice travels through the cell phones. Zhenya was mighty impressed by the way the muggles created new bits and pieces to communicate. Zhenya knew there must have been loads of negative impacts from using the cellular phones, especially if it converted your voice, travelled through cell towers, and off to its destination. She listened to other responses.
And suddenly there was a pop; Tinka. What was Tinka doing here? Something to do with AJ? But the house elf disappeared again moments later. Right.
Zhenya raised her hand, "Professor, you said that your voice gets converted to something," she looked down at her notes, "An RF wave, and it travels to the tower, then on to the person. It doesn't sound very secure. Could people's communication get intercepted and recorded my the muggle Ministry?" She knew that sometimes the Ministry intercepted Owls and the Floo network, so surely it was similar? Only you wouldn't know if someone was just listening to your conversation. How creepy... While the benefits of cell phones were clear, at least in Meredith’s eyes, she did think it was important to note that they weren’t always the best choice and the first reasons she’d thought up were ones being shared right now. ”Very good, you lot! Cell phones aren’t indestructible. They can break quite easily and if you’re relying on them for communication, this can pose a huge problem. Not to mention that if you cannot get to a power source to charge your cell phone, a requirement if you want it to work, you’re also left without a means of staying in contact with people. Good.”
Zhenya raised an interesting point as well, one which caused Moxley to tap her chin thoughtfully. ”With the way cellular phones work, I do believe that someone with the right technology, perhaps the government, could intercept your call, yes.” Where did that come from, hm? Was this kiddo paranoid about something? Moxley gave her a raised eyebrow, I’m keeping my eyes on you-type look and then move on. SPOILER!!: Chance of lost reception Quote:

Two-way mirrors were cool, but there was something about just sending a still photograph that was EXTRA cool.
Maybe it was just that it was a Muggle thing. Muggle things were always extra cool to Sophie Brown.
As Moxley went on to explain how cell phones actually worked, Sophie took notes. She'd given this plenty of thought and research, but hearing the professor give the exact logistics and details of it was enlightening even MORE to just how cool it was. SO COOL, MOXLEY. SO COOL.
What negatives were there, though? Well... a few came to mind. They were obvious for a pureblood who didn't grow up around Muggles - she was always quick to notice the drawbacks of things that didn't involve magic, so her hand went up. "With landlines, y'can pretty much always make a call... but cell phones can be tricky 'cause y'might be out in the middle of nowhere and lose service and not be able to use your phone at ALL. Like you said, the further you are from a cell phone tower, the worse it is to make the phone work. But I know landlines can always work, unless the power in the whole place is out or something, right? But at least they're more reliable to make a call and have, like... a connection or whatever than cell phones are. So you could be stranded somewhere in an emergency with your cell phone and need to phone for help, but because of getting no service, you'd be outta luck." That's why being magical was safer and better all-around - she never had to worry about running out of magic.
She considered herself very, very fortunate. Quote:

Then the question was happening. "Using only a sell phone as yer main source of communication would be severely limiting. And if there were a time where yer couldn't answer yer phone all yer friends and family might be worried because they'd know that as yer only means of communication yew ought have the phone on yer and answer it regularly." The social repercussions included, but also extended beyond what Caleb had said. Also, if you'd have to come up with a story to tell one girl whilst you were with the other. No good. Cutty would take owls, two-way mirrors, protean charms and fire chats anyday. ”I can tell you from firsthand experience that lack of reception in an area outside a city is the worst!” Moxley nodded solemnly before continuing on. ”Ms. Brown did a good job explaining why landline phones might be more reliable, given that cell towers are important to a cell phone’s ability to make a call. If you’re out in the woods somewhere and something happens, you’re not guaranteed that you’ll be able to get in contact with someone for help. All depends on how close the towers are to your area, good.” Sophie got a smile and a nod. Angel, too, since she’d had the same idea. ”Mr. Mordaunt’s answer goes nicely with this as he mentioned that sometimes not answering your phone puts the people around you into a sort of panic. With landline phones, people understand that you could be out of the house or in the shower, unable to answer the call. Since cell phones are portable, people have more cause to be concerned if you don’t answer, even if you’re unable to because of reception or other reasons.” SPOILER!!: Financial difficulty Quote:

He knew she didn't know much about Muggles but still... it was hilarious, yo! Anwhooo, Moxley did appreciate his answer so he happily bent his head to make notes. Not that he needed to make much because he knew a ton about this stuff.
Next question! The Puffer raised his hand again. "They can be difficult to maintain financially. So the more dependent you are on them, the more you'll have to pay to buy data or minutes or text messages.'' Er... that sounded like him over the summer except he never really cared how many dollars he had to spend because his phone was never used any other time of year. Quote:

Kate raised her hand a third time...
Her classmates kept stealing her ideas!!! Well, it was technically not stealing, because they had no idea she was thinking the same thing. Kate couldn't help but get frustrated, though. Next time, she had to be faster. When a fourth idea came to mind, Kate quickly raised her hand. "Cell phones use data for some of the features. You have to pay for the data, and if you accidentally use too much data, you have to pay even more money," she said, pointing out how much some of the features can cost. Money, yes. Moxley knew a little about spending too much on things. AHEM. MUGGLE ARTIFACTS. AHEM. So she could see where this might become a problem for some people. ”Very good, you two! When you get a cell phone, you not only pay for the phone, but for the service to run the phone, as well. It can get pricey, depending on how much you’re doing on your phone, and you have to be careful not to go overboard.” NOT that she was one to go overboard or anything. PSH. Couldn’t relate to that… MOVING ON! SPOILER!!: Social problems and, perhaps, health problems? Quote:

Negative things about cellphones? Hmm... that was kind of tough because AJ thought they were really awesome. "You can get mad addicted to some of the cool stuff on there and next thing you know you are walking into poles because you just can't tear yourself away." That was a serious problem. Quote:

"Because people can text instead of call, people literally have NO idea how to talk on the phone. Or to people in general. I've seen kids who send emails and stuff to PROFESSIONALS and they spell "your" like "UR" and it's just sad," he explained. "Basically, kids are missing that step where they learn important social skills because it's less work and effort to just send a text." He could really go on for a while with this. IT DROVE HIM NUTS. As Professor Moxley began to explain how cell phones worked, Janelle continued to take notes. The next question addressed the negative side of cell phones. Was there one? She took a moment to give it some thought. Of course there was a bad side. There was a bad side to everything. Janelle raised her hand to chime in on the topic. "If you depend on a cell phone too much, your whole world revolves around it. Then if you lose it or it breaks, you feel like you can't function. It's like your world has come to an end." Quote:

It was kind of funny to think about why the little phones worked. Usually it just seemed like all this muggle stuff worked like magic, and there wasn't anything going on behind it except there WAS. Lots and lots of things. She wasn't entirely sure if that was a good thing or not, but it was fun to think about all the same. Adding a mane of curly hair to her stick figure drawing just for fun, the fourth year looked up from her notes just as the first few students began answering Moxley's new question.
She put a hand up immediately, 'cause her gramps had talked about this before. The only problem was that she never really knew when he was joking or not, so she was just going to roll with it because she hadn't used the things enough to really get all the bad stuff. It was much easier to find the good stuff. "My gramps says that if you keep a cellular phone by your head for too long the wave-y things will fry your brains into jello." It all sounded a whole lot more ridiculous when SHE said it, but at least it was an answer. Now she'd really see if gramps knew anything. Quote:
Originally Posted by RoseMalfoy She may have been able to quickly pick up how to 'use' muggle technology, but how it 'worked' was another thing entirely. She had just accepted a long time ago that it was a strange non-magical magic that wasn't to be questioned. She certainly didn't know anything about cell towers; she'd heard her dad grumbling about the unreliability of muggle inventions, could he simply have lost service? And what was this about turning her voice into electricity? or waves? electric waves? Still sounded rather magical to her..
Speaking of, a house elf with a plate of tacos definitely just strolled past her desk, set the plate down in front of the wrong person (Desiree was hungry and those looked delicious, if slightly suspicious), and disappeared. She'd seen stranger things.
Regaining her focus she noted her classmates had most of the obvious answers covered. Zhenya made an especially interesting point, muggle surveillance... she'd never really thought about that. This was more of a personal opinion but, "Well, since it is so convenient a lot of people don't make the effort to write to each other anymore, which is a little sad. Getting a text from your friend just isn't the same, it doesn't make you quite as.. happy." Because they put effort into the letter, it's more meaningful, you know? and you can hold the parchment in your hands- Desiree was just a big fan of letters. Of course texting was nice, but the professor wanted negatives. These were the answers Moxley had anticipated and she nodded her head, a small smile gracing her lips. ”You can become addicted to your cell phone, yes, or actually, the services that your cell phone offers. It’s like having all forms of entertainment that you can get at home, the games and music and even television, but with you always.” And if that wasn’t a distraction from the things going on outside of the screen on your phone, Moxley didn’t know what was. ”Having all that available to you wherever you go makes it much easier to disregard the people and the things happening around you. In some cases, it gives people a way to hide from responsibilities, from having to tell people things face-to-face, and from knowing how to communicate wat they feel in person.” Which was a shame, really. ”This leaves some people feeling terribly out of sorts when their phones lose power or service, forcing them into the world without them. It’s interesting to think about, also concerning. Definitely something to keep in mind.”
Oh, and Ms. Kittredge's point! Moxley had nearly forgotten. "Norah's gramps brings up an interesting point about our health in relation to these phones. While I haven't read any studies that indicate your brain would indeed turn to jello-lovely stuff, very delicious!-prolonged use could certainly have some kind of negative impact on us. That is still being looked into, actually." Mhm! SPOILER!!: TACOS, TACOS, TACOS Quote:

Silently she made her way through the rows of desks and found the girl she sought. " Psssst, special delivery for miss," she whispered to AJ Valentine, setting the plate on the desk. " Enjoy, miss!"
And before the girl could say anything, the little elf disappeared with another POP! Quote:

WHY WERE THERE TACOS IN THE CLASS?
And WHYYYY did AJ get them all?
Zeke was staring, wishing the plate was meant for him. It never even occurred to him that something might be off about it until that Cutty dude mentioned poison and stuff. Still, he didn't think that would be the case. Why would an elf poison a student? And of all the students that would benefit from a poisoning, why then pick AJ?
She was good peeps. SO good in fact, that she should share with him. Mmhhmm. "I can help you with those if you want," he whispered in her (AJ's) direction. Quote:

N’aww. Why just her? Ethan was sure everyone else was starving inside the room.
And...heh. Since when did Cutty become so...kind to his fellows? The Slytherin eyed the back of his cousin’s head, as well as the plate bearing tacos. Quote:

Watching as Cutty cast the spell on them, she wondered who would poison delicious food...and who would use said poisoned food on AJ of all people. Mostly she just wondered if she could get a plate of tacos too because she had been craving them for half the lesson. Well, she’d had class attention until tacos happened and truth be told, now Moxley was distracted as well. TACOS. They smelled lovely, they looked lovely, and they made Moxley wish she had a plate for herself. The brunette found that she was suddenly making her way over to Ms. Valentine, her stomach rumbling as she did. She was just…going to investigate, okay? Especially after what Mr. Mordaunt had said. ”CLASS, ATTENION!” That meant to be quiet, FYI. ”I’m just going to…keep watch over these tacos for the rest of the lesson, and if Ms. Valentine feels like sharing once class has ended, she’s certainly free to do so.” The Muggle Studies Professor then picked up the plate and took a sniff, her nostrils filling with taco-y goodness. Mm. The smile was immediate. AHEM. ”Don’t worry, Ms. Valentine. I’ll be sure they stay warm.” There were charms for that, y’know. And so Moxley made her way back to the front, setting the plate of Tacos on Tiara’s desk for safe keeping.
Once that was done, Moxley tapped the picture she’d placed on the board and then addressed the group. ”I’d like for everyone to copy down what the cell phone looks like, please. A rough sketch will do. Just something you should have so that you can compare it to the drawing of the landline phone I trust you all still have in your notes. Once you’ve finished that, we’ll get into the activity!” Moxley smiled at Tiara excitedly and then checked to see that the kiddos were getting to work. OOC: One post will do for drawing the cell phone! We'll be starting with the main activity next time I post!
