If it... represented a place... what would it... uh... what?

Toby blinked at the professor a few times. What... was she...? Huh. Well that was a weird question. The seventh year frowned thoughtfully and looked at the board, and then at his parchment, and back again, trying to think of a place that that big ol' number made him think of. Uhhhhh...

The first thing that came to mind was, perhaps, completely obvious. He raised his hand and offered his answer. "Quidditch stadium. 'Cause it's a huge number, and stadiums have a huge number of seats. Maybe not..." There was a moment in which it looked like Toby was actually going to have a try at saying the number out loud, but... no... not a clue. "... not that many seats, but that's just what the number makes me think of, y'know?" Naturally. Sorta... one track mind over here.

Thinking about it... would a Quidditch stadium with 441,315,565,100 seats possibly be bigger than the ENTIRE PLANET? That would be so cool.
Hmm. "Probably the 'not' option. That would be quite an engineering feat, though!" Like, really. "But the reasoning is sound." Best not to crush his ego.

Here's a thought exercise for you: if this number were to represent a place, what type of place would you guess? Creative answers accepted!" she said enthusiastically.

Ian had just finished working on the problem when the professor began to speak again. She posted the answer, which he was pleased to have gotten correct. And then she asked a question. He thought for a moment and raised his hand. "Professor. My dad told me about this place in Asia where old men spend all their time in meditation and learning how to fight. I think he called them Sowling monkeys. Said they were perfect at mastering themselves. And could deliver a right proper beating if they need to but he told me they don't like to fight."
She cocked her head to the side a bit. "I have never heard of this group.. Write me up a short report and I'll give you some points for it." Tiara enjoyed learning; just because she wasn't a student anymore didn't mean it had lost its value.

Thankfully he didn't react any further for his friend proved to be just kinding with his remark. "Funny..." he mused with a small smirk. They sure were getting back to normal.

------and then class was beginning.

Reducing could be tricky and Benny was always having to double check to make sure he either didn't miss anything or didn't go too far with what they were doing. With the number presented, the Gryffindor copied it cautiously into his notes before proceeding to follow what he knew about reduction. He didn't have the excuse of being one of those students that didn't take arithmacy.

Looking up at the board, the sixth year saw that he was right with his math. The 8 as the final number, matching what Tanner had revealed to them. As for the musing out before them, there was one place that stood out to Benny so he figured he might as well mention it. "A bank...like Gringotts." Wealth....business...success...all seemed to fit.
"That does sound like a good fit. Well done, Mister Atreyu," she said with a nod.

Yoongi Hyland”

Huh? Who was PSSSSSTing at him? Yoongi looked after the Professor gave the approval of someone helping him out and realised it was AJ. “Ah, thanks!” He let her see his notes, biting his lower lip as she peered at it and listened to what she was explaining.

“So…like this?” he said and began to write down on his parchment again

He looked uncertainly at AJ before continuing… counting on his fingers the whole time. It was slow, but he was getting there.

”Is this right?he asked.

And class was continuing. Yoongi was glad that this time it wasn’t them having to calculate anything right now. Could the Muggle Studies bit come now? “Minister’s office?” he piped in.
Yoongi Hyland. She would try to remember that. "A good guess, Mister Hyland!" He hadn't excelled at the first part of the lesson, so it was good that he had done well on this next portion.

Who knew that numbers and maths and things could actually result in something that wasn't awful.

Oh. A place? That was easy peasy, she'd thought about that one already. The fourth year shot a hand up in the air and waved it around, so ready to be two for two in this class they'd got going. She could see it now, Norah Kittredge QUEEN of Arithmancy. "A bank!" Geddit? Numbers? Business? Wealth? It totally worked. Plus banks were cool when they were like gringotts because goblins had the best faces ever.
Another guess for a bank. "Indeed, it doesn't have to be Gringotts, it could be a muggle establishment." This was a joint Muggle Studies lesson, after all.

Smiling to herself, she put a big check mark next to work just BECAUSE.

She looked down at the meaning of the number eight, which she'd copied from the textbook. If the meaning was a place, what place would it be? A bank was her first answer, but since that had already been said, she opted for some place else. "What about the Ministry of Magic?" she asked, her hand raised. Her mom worked there, and there seemed to be a lot of authority figures and successful people there. Material wealth? Hmm. Maybe not so much.

It was likely a bank, she decided.
That did fit the bill, yes. "Good thought, Miss Addison."

Carefully penning her notes, she worked it out quietly for a moment or two:

SPOILER!!: notes

441,315,565,100
(4+4+1) + (3+1+5) + (5+6+5) + (1+0+0)
9 + 9 + 16+ 1
18 + 17
=35 .... 3+5
= 8

She underlined and circled her final answer and then Tanner proposed another question again. What sort of place might this number represent? The first thing that popped into her head was Hogwarts, but she felt the need to go more grandiose. Hogwarts was too simple. Too plain.

"I think it could potential represent the idea of a place, as in one where the living is easy. Perhaps a tropical private island, or a five-star resort, a castle in the mountains, ..." Tia began after raising her hand. "It's luxurious, yet completely relaxed."
That was a unique take. "Interesting thought process. I would have to say that the older you get, the more you will realize that success and wealth do not automatically bring relaxation." But that was beside the point. "Good work."

It was annoying.

But with Lux's help...and watching other people, Eden figured out how to do this.....reduction thing. Right. Yeah. Totally and completely easy, mhmm.

Well...so...I have to do...4 + 4 + 1 + 3 + 1 + 5 + 5 + 6 + 5 + 1 + 0 + 0....which....equals 35. She scribbled all of this down as she did it. And then 3+5 is.... 8. Eden was glad this was EASY math, at least, Merlin.

Eden raised her hand, after seeing what 8 meant and stuff..."Well...success and whatnot...a cooperation of some sort..and since this is combined with muggle studies--a muggle corporation of some sort."

Was that a good answer? No. Eden was feeling.....eehhh about things.
Tiara nodded. "Good idea, good connection," she said, giving the girl a smile of reassurance.

Yep.

Looked like Eden had it in the bag. She was going to stay here though because she was comfortable. Maybe she and Eden could help each other out later if the math got really hard. They could be an awesome team! BEAM.

At Professor Tanner's question, Lux raised her hand. "I would that it would represent a business of some sort...like a real proper one with CEOs and stuff."
Tiara liked free form questions such as this one because she enjoyed seeing how students' brains worked. For instance, Lux thinking that a small business wouldn't be considered 'success.' That was probably how Tiara had felt at that age as well. "Indeed, a large business fits the bill." Though it wasn't as heavy on the 'authority' aspect.

Interesting method? What did Tanner mean by that? Adi tilted his head at his Professor. "But this is always how I do my reduction calculations.'' He frowned at his parchment, taking a while to figure out what was meant by Tanner's statement. OH! She meant his reduction of 16 when he could simply have added the 16,9,9 and 1 then reduce it! He looked back at the woman. "I see what you mean. I really have no idea. Maybe we can try this method out sometime with random numbers to see if it works all the time.''
...................

Annnnd back to the class. Adi was totally done peeking into Benny's parchment, by the way. He had to make sure the bestie was doing things right. Yep, everything had seemed a-okay there. As for an answer to that question, he had one! Hand up, Adi volunteered, "A law firm!'' Hehe. Lawyers had all of those things going for them. Or maybe most.
Wow. This class was creative, and Tiara loved it. Hardly anyone had come up with the same answers. "I had not thought of that one, Mister Rehman. Good thinking."

Aside from the fact that he had to do more work and climb around all those tables just to get here, "it's not a big deal." He tried his best to assure the Hufflepuff kid as he stood up. "Hope that sort of made things easier?" Zander awkwardly mussed his hair before flashing a huge smile over at Professor Moxley ('cause that had to earn him some brownie points, right?) and making his way back to his seat next to Soph.

As for the question.

It had Zander thinking. Of course all of the other answers were great. Buuuut they were in a JOINT lesson. Which meant the number had to mean something muggle. Or at least that was Zander's train of thought, anyways. "The muggle population of Europe?" It was a stretch
It sounded like someone needed a little bit of social studies knowledge. "I think that would be far too large for Europe, unfortunately." Or the rest of the world, for that matter. "But nice try!"

She quite liked the number 8. It had two circles, one could be bigger than the other, or they could be the same size, and they were almost like a forever, continuing, never breaking.

What did that represent? Well it was obvious, but she didn't want to spill too much information out at once, so she would break it down to a simple answer. She raised her hand and waited for Professor Tanner to call upon her, "To me, the number 8 would represent the place you call home. I think the number 8 is an infinite number, you could keep drawing over it without your quill leaving the page, so to me, I could keep going on in life, but my home will always be my home." Did that make sense? She wasn't sure the comparison made much sense but it did in her head.
Now that was creative. It didn't follow the textbook, but she hadn't said they needed to. "What a thoughtful answer, Miss Burton. I like your style." She gave the girl a smile in appreciation.

Already he was curious about this lesson. Well, the arithmancy portion of it at least. If the number was a place? What place would it be?

Authority? Success? Material wealth? ...........

....

But then there were all those OTHER things too. Mastery and fluidity and other things.

Hand up, Zeke voiced the most OBVIOUS conclusion that came to him. And by obvious, it was obvious to him. "Hogwarts, Professor. Cause you Professor's give us rules and there are consequences to breaking them, it's a place where we learn and become better at things and successful, we're in a super old castle with pretty portraits and shiny things..." not to mention the house point hour glasses held GEMS and STONES and things. So yeah. It was obvious to him. So so SO obvious.
What did Mister Rogers have for them? "I wondered if someone would say Hogwarts! I think it fits the bill quite well."

So much for the Ministry of Magic and Gringotts. Now she had to really think about the answer......and fast.

Janelle should have thought of putting her hand down while she re-thought her answer. As she was trying to come up with a back-up answer, she was called on. "Um.......how about........the home of a self-made millionaire. They must have had some success to get all of that money and........they probably have a lot of material wealth-y things in their home. And if you're a millionaire, you probably have authority over something or someone.......right?" Wow, talking about grasping at straws. Well, it was an answer.
It seemed like most students were focusing on the money aspect the most, which wasn't a problem. "Right," she said in response to the trailing question at the end. "Good thinking."

"Perfect." He got a thumbs up and a smile. "Oh, and anytime." It was really cool when she got to help somebody else because for the longest time she was always the one who was needing the help, not giving it.

Slowly but surely, she was starting to wake up. It was a process. Whoops. Even the professor had noticed it. "Yes, ma'am." A nap sounded wonderful, but she knew that would never happen. Once AJ Valentine was going... well, there was no stopping her.

Hmmm... creative answers were appreciated. That was a relief because that was pretty much all she had to offer. This lion was an out of the box thinker to say the least.

Her hand shot into the air. See? She was awake. "I think it would be a taco stand." She had a point, promise! "Loads of money in the taco business and if you get to sling taco meat all day... well, I don't what could be more successful than that." You know what? She was going to have a taco stand right outside of her vet office. She couldn't wait to tell Adi.
She seemed more awake already! Tiara chuckled. "Miss Valentine, I can honestly say that is the most creative answer I will get all week in lessons. Take two points!" Because even though she was way off, she had made Tiara laugh, and that was worth points any day.

But now the question was... WHAT WERE THE NUMBERS FOR? She squinted at Tanner and her vagueness - the number represented a place, not an amount of money? What kind of place, was the question, and Sophie considered it for a little while. Success... authority... wealth...

And her hand raised. "Well... when I think of success 'n wealth 'n authority, there's no higher than--..." she paused. She was going to say the Ministry of Magic, but then she caught sight of Moxley - this was partly Muggle Studies class, wasn't it? So... maybe she needed to try for something more... Muggle. "Than... the Queen? The Royal Family, maybe, or like... Buckingham Palace or something, 'cause that's all wealth and success and authority and stuff."

And stuff. Really good answer there, Soph.
Then came another member of the Dream Team. And her answer lived up to the title. "That is actually really truly fantastic guessing, Miss Brown." She pointed once more at the board and the number morphed, separating out into different components.

Quote:
441,315,565,100 --> +44 131 556 5100
"Many of you may recognize this as a muggle telephone number. In fact, it is the phone number for the Palace of Holyroodhouse, which just so happens to be the official residence of the muggle king or queen in Scotland." In other words, basically the Buckingham Palace for when they were in Scotland. "I think Miss Brown deserves 5 points for hitting the nail on the head!"

So, onto the new material. "Telephone numbers and house numbers can be used in Arithmancy, believe it or not. The main idea is that if the number reduces down to something bad, you may want to reconsider buying the house or perhaps taking a different telephone number." Tiara walked to the board and wrote by hand 'Karmic Numbers.'

"If you look in chapter three, you'll see a list of karmic numbers, sometimes referred to as karmic debts. They are 10, 13, 14, 16, and 19. These are what you are trying to avoid at any point in your reduction." Or any type of debt.. but that was also beside the point. "For instance..."

Quote:
201-2524
2+0+1+2+5+2+4 = 16 --> 1+6 = 7
"Though the final reduction is indeed seven, not a karmic number, the reduction contains 16, which is. Notice I did not include country codes, area codes, or similar, just the local number. So, your task! I am providing a list of just phone numbers, since that is what you are studying in Muggle Studies. They are all for famous muggle establishments just to make it interesting. Reduce them down, and tell me what you think about using that number."

Quote:
+44 20 7323 8299, use 7323 8299
+1 202 456 1111, use 456 1111
+61 2 9250 7111, use 9250 7111
OOC: Apologies if I messed up the local part of the phone number for your country!
