| *not quoting...BUT JULIA!SOPHIE* astronomizzle ♧ gryffinDORK | & the rest is drag ♣ #badluckDerf Chuckle louder next time, Flamsteed. And it wasn't that her compliment was not appreciated, it was simply unwarranted. Add checking his sense of humor to the list of things to do in the future. Although, in all honestly, it was unlikely that he would be able to truly focused enough to remember and act on these thoughts. Awkward interactions with students was simply written on his DNA.
"At ease, Miss Brown," he chuckled, LOUDER this time, while loosening his tie. "There is no need to be on the defensive with me." NOT scolding, by the way. Simply informing with a casual tone and genuine, but awkward, smile. Rubbing his hands, that were more than a bit sweaty, on his trousers, he bowed his head when the Ravenclaw accepted his offer. Nothing further needed to be said on the matter. No need to draw further attention on things they both knew to be false.
Now, the man may not be the best at speaking on feelings. In fact, he was probably at the bottom of that totem pole among students in regards to who they would speak to about personal matters - save for one special Slytherin a few terms ago, whose name would remain privately in his thoughts. He had had his fair share of crying students, Alexa Cambridge and Kyroh Scabior instantly popping into mind, who he had tactlessly handled once said waterworks were noticed. So no, he was not the best at this sort of conversation despite constantly hurtling himself at them recklessly in true Gryffindor fashion.
What he did pride himself on was his ability to read body language - he had even read his fair share of books on the matter before becoming an astronaut instructor. Therefore, he knew what that shrug was before she even started speaking again. He listened intently, of course, as she spoke and it wasn't just the tone that gave away the deeper meaning to her words. Seeing how well the previous bits of this conversation had gone...he was going to give Miss Brown the benefit of not trying to delve deeper into the inner angst of of a teenage Ravenclaw.
"If you'll forgive my attempt at being a philosopher, Miss Brown," he said, reaching into his enchanted breast pocket for something in particular. "Perhaps, when you go on these runs, you should make sure you are running towards something...rather than away from."
Just some unsolicited advice.
Finding what it was he was looking for, the astronomer removed it and twirled it in the palm of his left hand with his right. "Do you mind if I ask you a question, Miss Brown?" he asked with a childlike curiosity. "Can you explain to me the appeal of this sort of thing?"
He hadn't bought it himself, for the record. Daphne had sent him it as a joke.
