"You should always have your defences up. The Daily Prophet wouldn't write such a thing without a good lead." Did she get this part? That she shouldn't believe him?

Sophie just stared pretty blankly at Culloden as he talked, hardly believing her ears. He really wouldn't trust a Hogwarts professor without the use of Veritaserum? He wouldn't take Dakest's word for it? Yes, Sophie knew all about "constant vigilance" from Bunz's little lesson last term... but... BUNZ was the one who HIRED Dakest. Unless she was under the influence of the Imperius Curse or something... wouldn't she have done extensive research and background-checking on this new professor before hiring him? And the guy was an AUROR for crying out loud, his job was to FIGHT bad things like that.

"How d'you know they wouldn't write something like that without a good lead? What if... what if they were just trying to brew up trouble? What if the writer got bribed and paid a hefty sum to write an article like that, or his family was threatened if he didn't make Professor Dakest look bad? Those kind of things happen in real life, too, and..." She shrugged. It felt so silly to be defending a man who shouldn't have needed to be defended at all. She'd never once gotten bad vibes from the guy. He didn't seem like a vile man, even a little bit. Especially looking at his wife and kids, when she visited his office with Evie...

No, there was no way he was living a life of evil.

"Well, whaddya gonna do then? If you think he's so bad, and you don't wanna talk to him, you're just gonna let your students keep going to his classes? Let him turn us into Dark witches and wizards?" Did he see how flawed his thinking was at the moment? He needed to come talk to him with her. Staying out of it when he feared the worst was cowardice. He had to do something if he thought things were amiss, and Sophie desperately wanted to prove him wrong.
