Dante just shrugged. He had no idea what they were and that was his best guess, as bad as it was. And now he knew what illuminated manuscripts were. They were more interesting than what Dante first thought they were.

He could be completely wrong but it sounded smart. He went for the silver first since it was a house color and all. Plus he could probably get a little bit instead having to share with someone else.
Sharing is definitely not caring.
