While the kiddos were busy with notes, Moxley was busy producing three cardboard boxes and setting them on her desk. One had tin cans inside, the next had hammers and nails, and the last had pre-cut string. Once she'd finished setting everything out, she stepped up to the front of the room and clapped her hands to call everyone's attention to the front.

"Now I know some of you are still working on your sketch and that's okay, but please take a moment to listen to what we'll be doing for the remainder of class." They really did need to get going if they wanted to have enough time to make, and try out, their next little project. "Tin Can Phones are easy to make and simple to use. They also show how sound waves travel from one can, convert into vibrations as they travel along the string in the middle, and then go back to sound waves when reaching the second can." Moxley had turned to the board at this point, drawing a simple diagram on the board to show the class.

"Telephones that are hooked up inside the home work along the same idea. They have microphones inside which convert sound waves into electric currents along a wire, and then back into sound waves." Interesting, she knew.

"Now to make a tin can cups phone you'll need two cans. You use the hammer and a nail to make a small hole at the bottom of each can. Do this carefully, please. Then you'll thread the string through each can, making knots at each end so the string does not come out of either can." She stopped to write these steps on the board quickly for those not paying attention because there was always a few.

Quote:
Need: 2 cans, 1 hammer, 1 nail, and a string

Steps: 1. Carefully, using the hammer and nail, make a small hole at the bottom of each can.

2. Thread string through the cans and tie them off at each end so string remains attached.

3. Congratulations, you have a tin can phone!
"Once you've made your phone, find a partner! You and your partner can take turns testing out your phones. Make sure you spread out across the room, keeping the string taut when you're trying to communicate. One person listens at one end, one person talks at the other. If you keep the string taut, you should be able to hear the message your partner is saying." Grin! "And if you're finished with your drawing, you may come up to get your materials and get started!"

OOC:First, if you want to make any catch-up posts, I will count those for credit!

If anyone has any questions during the activity, please put it in the title of your post and I'll get to it as soon as possible! At least 4 posts, please! Class will close Saturday, May 30th at around 8pm EDT! You have until then to get your posts in! :3
