The fake dementor had fled at the sight of the mist, and Brooklyn had wasted no time at all in moving forward again, her hand finding the wall yet again as she proceeded. There was no reason not to trust her plan of attack, after all. So far, it hadn’t failed her. She didn’t think she was irreversibly lost, anyway. She doubted the professor would allow her to be irreversibly lost. Not his first year teaching, and besides, Aurors were supposed to protect people. Maybe that was why he’d been hired, because of last term and Gregoire dying. The Headmistress had wanted protection at the castle. More than what the other professors could provide by themselves. It wasn’t as if she’d trust Professor Flamsteed with keeping her safe, or a few of the others. Maybe Professor Bellaire and Healer Murdoch though. They were strong, and besides, her House leaders.

Even as she’d continued that train of thought, she’d kept moving forward. Turning right when she could, or whatever direction the path veered. There had been a small pile of boulders in her path she’d had to climb over, but her hand had found its way back to the wall soon enough and she’d begun wandering if there in fact was a pretend lethifold in here anywhere. So far she hadn’t found it. Maybe tha t meant it wasn’t there.

Except, as she’d turned another corner, there was suddenly a pool of blackness ahead of her. Actually, not a pool. What looked a bit like a flying carpet, except inky black and oppressive, and she eyed it suspiciously. It didn’t look threatening, but neither had the swamp until last term. Both had inched closer to her, though, and she’d lifted her wand again. No time to waste. Momentarily wondering if the previous memory would work again, she almost forgot about the lethifold until she realized it was nearly on top of her.

She was not going to let a pretend dark creature kill her. Not Brooklyn Andrews. Not her. As the single word appeared in her head, the memory of when she’d been Sorted and had been so very happy she’d been somewhere else than her sister had been, she whipped her wand up above her, making the familiar circle motion as she loudly spoke. “Expecto Patronum!”

A bright mist burst free, still not anywhere close to a creature like the professor’s otter but much solider than any of her previous tries, and the lethifold fled. No, it vanished, and she abandoned her methodical approach to the maze. Running, she turned corners until she saw the exit. She’d found a memory, anyhow, but she was definitely done with this maze. She’d slowed down to a walk as she exited, though, just in time to hear that the lesson was over. Nobody had seen her lapse. Not at all. She'd gathered her things once she looped back around the outside of the maze, and exited with a nod to the professor. She'd just work on the spell on her own.
