It was a pain to carry everything when running, especially the flag that was only about a foot shorter than he was, but he muddled on through.
He slowed to a halt on his way back around the lake (why had he not stopped to do the flag stuff earlier? the world may never know), having spotted a familiar figure from a short distance away. Adi, the prefect from the year below.
"Adi," said Toby, slightly out of breath from his intense run, as he walked the last few steps to close the distance. "Astronomy homework?" Yeeeees? 'Cause Toby had his flag TOO. Maybe he'd stop and set his up somewhere near here as well.
Three, four feet off of the shore line, hmmm? Would that be sufficient enough for him to stick the flag in the sand water? Probably. Adi decided he would make up his mind when he got there. But first, he needed to roll up his jeans around his feet. Of course he could always leave it and just wade out like that but he figured the extra weight of water soaked pants would hamper him a bit. So, he bent to adjust those jeans just as he heard the voice of his fellow Puff.
"Heya, Toby! Morning!'' A cheery grin for you.
"Yup! Got my flag and everything.'' You know the good thing about meeting a Hufflepuff so early in the morning? They are not likely to be grumpy. Tobias looked bouncy and ready to go! Maybe he was here to do the homework too.
Adi retrieved his flag on which his name was already written.
"Come on! Let's go do this!'' Waaaah? Give Tobias a chance to catch his breath, Adi! But the younger boy was already taking off towards the Lake.
...............
Brrr! It was cold, yo! Did he care? Nope!
"I reckon four feet out is enough,'' Adi called to Tobias and stuck his flag in the soft bed of sand of the Lake. Yeaaaah, it seemed enough for him. So now he just measured from his flag to the edge of the water? Was that it? It was only logical.
Using the ruler he had gotten from Flamsteed's office, he did just that.
"Three and a half inches,'' Adi announced to Tobias after he was done.
"What does yours say?" Tobias would have a different reading, yes? It all depended on how far out he stuck the flag.
As he waited on the other dude, Adi shifted his weight from one foot to the other as he got started on his log.
