Oh... next... there wouldn't be a next year. Well, never mind THAT then.
While he had a few moments to spare, Toby crouched down and used that hot air charm around his feet, to sort of dry them off a bit though he knew they'd probably be getting wet again for the main activity. While he did that, he glanced back up at the first year to see how he was getting on.
Having problems, and not dealing so well with that, apparently.
"Hey, it's okay buddy," the Hufflepuff said in what he hoped was an encouraging way as he abandoned the drying-off mission and straightened again. He smiled. "Professor Airey said it would be difficult. It took me a few goes to get right, too. Try saying it slowly a few times first, just to get used to the words, then at regular speed. Aqua-traxi Gra-vita. Aquatraxi Gravita." Toby patiently spoke the words, trying to be as clear as he could and EN-UN-SEE-ATE so the boy could mimic him if he wanted. 'Cause it sounded like the problem was partly in the incantation; perhaps the other boy was just eager to get going. Toby could understand that. "When you think you've got a handle on that, how about trying again? I usually like to try and reeeeally visualise what the spell is going to do, and focus on that as I cast. That might help."
Toby gave him his most encouraging smile, to show he belieeeeeved in him. You go lil first year bud, you got this.
Resisting the strong urge to stomp his foot, James just GLARED at his wand for BETRAYING him and not doing what he wanted. The other boy's words made him relax a little and look up. He supposed the professor HAD said that... SIGH.
"Aqua. Traxi. Gra. Vita." Yes? He'd paused after every one, trying to make sure he was right. His little face screwed up with concentration as he spoke the words slowly again.
"Aquatraxi. Gravita." Aww! He'd got it wrong again!
Pouting for a moment as Toby spoke, James listened and then nodded. Okay. He could do this.
"Aquatraxia Gravita" UGH.
"No... Aquatraxi Gravita" The little firstie STAAAARED at the balloon.
"Aquatraxiiiii Graaaavitaaaaa." Was that a war cry? No? Well it was now. This was WAR. He was going to DESTROY this balloon. He imagined it rolling toward him helplessly and crying out to its brothers for help just before SMUSHING onto his wellies. Heh. His eyes lit up now and he stood up straight.
"Aquatraxi Gravita." He cast confidently as he smacked himself on the head again with his wand.
He swayed a little as he rubbed his head afterward, but also realised the balloon had MOVED. Not a LOT, but it had MOVED. Tilting his head curiously, Jay took one step forward and then one back and squealed with delight at it following him.
"YAY! THANK YOU!" Could he hug the other boy? Was that MANLY? No? Awww. Well... he'd just... um...
"Chocolate frog card?" It was one of his extras, so he didn't mind SO much about giving it away.
