| astronomizzle ♧ gryffinDORK | & the rest is drag ♣ #badluckDerf He appreciated the effort Nessarose had made to return the Vulcan salute. It could be a bit tricky for the unpracticed hands to master. Oh look, there was the new groundskeeper. Maybe he should place bets with Cecelia on how long he would last rather then which of their two houses would best the other. Especially since he was overly confident that he knew the outcome already for the latter. SPOILER!!: OUR BROS! Quote:

From the corner of his eyes he did catch Leo's smile and wave. Thankfully he wasn't so engrossed in his act that he'd missed it and the man did give a wave back. They had things to discuss later on. Interesting enough, Cassie chose to vacate her seat, without so much as a 'hello' when he had arrived. He'd have thought more of it, if his attention hadn't immediately been pulled back to this Dakest fellow. "I'm glad you've gotten some hints on the matter..." He fixed his gaze on Airey once more, contemplating how best to proceeed. What were they doing as heads about this situation? "Being a former enforcer of the law, I trust you appreciate the delicate nature of the situation. At the moment we don't have the hard evidence to send him away to Azkaban but we're not prepared to sit around and wait to catch him in the act with someone else...not when there are so many fragile lives at stake. For now the best course--" Thump. Maddox blinked when his face was suddenly attacked by a ball of parchment. It was in that moment he realized the children entering before his eyes shifted over to Airey again. "It's best to humour him...so we don't set him off." He whispered to Sabel before allowing the grin to finally slip back on his face. "Airey! I'd love one. Kind of you to offer. How did you know my nephew wanted one?" Highly unlikely given the boy was only three but eh. Quote:

He made a mental note that perhaps a more private discussion was needed with the Hogwarts Head and returned a smile and a nod her way. The second note was to the woman sitting beside him, the one with hair as bright as her personality. It was a quick decision to make. He liked her so far. Friendly and cheery. "Cassie then." He nodded with a warm smile of his own that was tinged with only a faint hint of surprise. So, she knew what his previous job was, as did the man beside him. He supposed it made sense, even though it made him shift somewhat uncomfortably in his chair. Secrets around his job had become so normal, he'd forgotten what it was like to be in a place with such open conversation. "I am, or was. For just over a decade." He felt old. A glance down the table to the end Professor with the cane reminded him to stifle any such sentiments. "As for why I'm here...I've always enjoyed teaching and there are better prospects on the whole here, than at the Ministry." For life, safety, family. Just all around, better. Plus, teaching kids sure beat running after dangerous, dark criminals. Maybe?
His eyes slipped to the students as they began filing in, the knots of nerves returning. Or maybe the former was easier? Time would certainly tell. As interesting as watching the students and trying to pick out the trouble-makers was, he had a strong case of two sitting at the table with him. He watched Cassie depart from her seat, and gave a nod and 'evening' to those Professor's newly arriving. His attention returning to Quigley when the man spoke again, his eyebrows arching again. Hints? He thought to tell the man that he had just repeated what he had said, but let the point go on account of listening to his reasoning as to why nothing had been done.
Despite his best attempts, a small, amused smile twitched up on the corner of his lips. He opened his mouth to offer his reply, and was cut just as short as the other man by the flying paper. They were...sitting at the Professor's table, right? Sabel did a double-take down the line just to make sure. No, no students among them.
Reaching over, Sabel plucked the paper up and unfolded it, sparing the Charms Professor a brief glance at his advice. Well, the drawing was certainly cute. Pet rocks. Was that a thing now? His eyes slipped to the box, to the Astronomy Professor, to Maddox and then back again as he leaned in a little. "A DADA Professor, who got done in by a handful of pet rocks. Sounds very delicate indeed."
With a confidential smile at the Charms Professor, he folded up the paper and leaned around behind Quigley to extend his hand in a handshake. "Airey, was it? Sabel Dakest. If you've got a spare pet rock, I'd be happy to adopt one."
Filtering out all of the children talk going on at the table - sweet solstice there was A LOT this term and it was making him scratch at his arms anxiously - he turned his attention instead back to Maddox and Not-Medea.
Who was apparently called Sabel Dakest. He should have remembered that from the memo. Whoops. Plenty of distractions going on up in this noggin of his this evening.
Eyeing the hand for a moment, the astronomer returned the handshake with a faint grin. "It was. Is. Is Airey," he confirmed, with a few firm shakes before releasing the new professor's hand. "Stellar to meet you." Sort of.
"Oh there are plenty of rocks for everyone, not to worry," he beamed. Alright, you had just earned a few awesome points in the Astronomy professor's book for wanting to adopt a rock. He had to admit that he was a bit surprised that Maddox did as well, but it really was the perfect sort of pet for someone like the Charms professor. Took only as much effort as you were willing to put in to take care of - although Airey had some standards he hoped all would meet. "Let me give you the paperwork to mull over and if you are sure you can just sign it now and we'll get you matched with the perfect rock for you."
Reaching into his enchanted breast pocket, he pulled out a piece of parchment for each of them and slide them across the table. Did they need quills? He had those too. For the record.
