| be curious, not judgmental Sophie had BIG, grateful smiles for Caleb, Adi, and Benny, all of whom were very kind and sweet and she would've offered her greatest appreciation to them... but there were literally two Pucks in the room. Two. Wasn't one enough to last them all a lifetime? Merlin.
When the second one appeared, Sophie instinctively had felt for her wand in her holster, immediately on edge. Was this the kind of thing Bunz had warned them about last term? Dangers? Shouldn't they all be, like... on VERY high alert here? Both Pucks looked calm as could be, Adi and Benny didn't seem too bothered, and Caleb was indifferent...
But what about the very real THREAT here? What if this WAS bad news? Was no one taking this seriously? Did they need their newest addition to the team to act? Was this some kind of TEST?
If it was, Sophie Brown wasn't going to fail it. So she wasn't going to just sit there and watch to see what happened - she was going to analyze the scenario whether they liked it or not, just in case this WAS some sort of bizarre initiation. Was Bunz monitoring their compartment somehow?
"...Okay, time out. Dunno 'bout you guys, but I need to talk this out. Two Pucks." Announcing her forthcoming speech topic. "That one," she pointed to the first Puck who had arrived, "was clumsy and tried too hard to be nice. Not a significant difference from normal Puck, but worth noting. And the second Puck," she pointed at the one with the food, "brought us food. Which is very good, because I'm hungry, and signifies a sense of familiarity with how things work here. But is that trying too hard to bring a sense of normalcy? And her reaction to seeing the other Puck - totally nonchalant. Unfazed, even. Would the real Puck be so calm? Or is it the impostor being so calm in the face of entering a compartment with Puck already here, and they'd already mentally prepared themselves for being calm and cool upon joining us?" Was it just a trick?
She continued along, speaking entirely too quickly, "In general, though, if there was a Puck impostor with ill intentions, why would they be here? If this impostor was a threat, they would've avoided this compartment because they definitely knew the real Puck would be here. It would've been easy to fool people at the other end of the train, so... this person didn't want to sneak on the train disguised as a student and fool as all - this person wanted to be caught, or they just didn't care and wanted to have fun. If we were in trouble, the person wouldn't have wanted to get found out at the very beginning of our voyage today." Right? "So we can almost certainly deduce that this person isn't a threat, which is what we all should've instinctively been suspicious of when we were seeing double of one of our own, and..." And...? "And... s'just a matter of deciphering which Puck is the real Puck."
Sophie encouragingly nudged Zander's side. "You know her well. Go on, ask the Pucks something only the real one would know." Then they would REALLY know, since they couldn't just ask who was real. Nothing would stop the impostor from playing along and claiming to be the real one anyway, right?
