Chapter Two: First Years Part I
Thanks,” Anna muttered to her uncle, as he unloaded their trunks and pushed them himself. In a moment, the Dursleys were gone. Anna watched the space they had just turned from. Good, they were gone. She turned her head, a mischievous smile playing on her lips. “Gone,” she said. It was the first time in their lives they were without the Dursleys. “No Dudley to shove sand in my mouth.
No Dudley to stop us from having friends,” Harry added.
No Dudley to stop us from making friends,” Anna said, a serious look on her young face.
Harry just smiled and nodded. They wouldn’t be going somewhere to be ‘Dudley’s cousins’; they were going somewhere that Dudley had never been heard of.
No Dudley to eat all the cake,” Anna said, and the twins laughed. “I wonder if there WILL be cake? Or… or pudding?
I hope so. Or custard tarts!
There they stood for a few minutes, speculating about all the delicious things they would be able to eat, getting giddy at the thought. They each grabbed their own trolley and began pushing it towards platform 9, but there was no sign saying Platform 9 ¾. “Where do we go?” Anna asked.
Harry shrugged; both their hearts sank a little as they looked around in all directions for their platform. Neither wanting to admit to it, but both thinking what if this is just a joke the Dursleys played on us? But no, it couldn’t be a joke. There was a large family walking, talking about Hogwarts, and pushing trolleys with with owls! The twins looked at each other smiling, and pushed their trolleys towards the family.
The woman looked between them a few times, nodded and explained what they had to do. In a few moments the twins were standing on Platform 9 ¾. It was real. There was the scarlet train Hagrid had mentioned, and there were so many people running around on the platform, parents saying goodbye to their children, loads of owls, toads and cats. The twins walked over and, with help from two of the red haired boys they had seen earlier, found their luggage stored securely in an empty compartment.
Thanks,” Harry said, wiping the hair from his face.
You’re – you’re… H-Harry Potter?” one of them said. Anna looked between her brother and the boy. Harry nodded. The two boys, twins themselves, exchanged looks, then glanced at Anna.
We’re Fred and George,” they introduced, “Twins as well.
Anna smiled and said, “I’m Anna.” They were being friendly. She almost looked around to see where Dudley was hiding, but he wasn’t there. No one was there to tell these boys not to be friends with them.
Anna and Harry sat in their own compartment as the train began its journey, when another red haired boy, Ron, joined them and introduced himself to them. They started talking and introduced themselves. Ron told them all about the four houses of Hogwarts; “My whole family have been in Gryffindor and I don’t know what I’ll do if I’m not in it. In Ravenclaw you have the smart people, Slytherin is the dark wizards, and Hufflepuff is… Well, I think it’s for the people who don’t get into the other houses,” Ron replied, looking confused. It was his first year too, so he didn’t know what to expect. They thought they might like to be in Gryffindor, because they wanted to stay with Ron. He genuinely seemed to want to be friends with them.
It was such good fun on the train. The twins had finally been able to buy their own food, eat as many sweets as they wanted without them being scoffed by their fat cousin, and they had been able to share with their friend.

Once the train had arrived, the first years joined Hagrid across to Hogwarts. It didn’t matter if the first years were pureblood, half-blood or muggle born – every eye watched the castle with awe. It was beautiful, and it was their first sight of Hogwarts. They were ushered into The Great Hall, and Anna felt her stomach contract in nervous excitement. There were so many people, and hundreds of candles floated in the sky. Incredible. Professor McGonagall had them all gather around a very old hat; “the Sorting hat, which will sort you into one of the four houses…” she explained.
The list went down and down.

Potter, Anna” read Professor McGonagall. The hall went silent, but Anna took no notice. As she walked up to the stall to sit down, she watched the staff sitting at the table. They were all watching her eagerly. She sat down and the hat went on, falling over her face. It smelt like mothballs. For the first time in a week she felt at peace, like she had been left to her thoughts at the end of a good day. It seemed like forever. She was scared the hat had broken, was there something wrong with her? She felt the hat thinking, but inside her head. It was going through all the houses, and she pictured herself in all the different coloured robes. It finally narrowed down to two houses. “But where to put you…” she heard in her mind.
