"You do, but I'm not sure I can provide all the answers you are looking for." He let out a breath and shrugged his shoulders somewhat helplessly. "The only real truth I can tell you is about myself, and that the article has twisted my service with the MLE. My 'convenient' return? I was working on long-term assignments, undercover. All assignments for the MLE, for the Ministry." He shrugged again. "As a key player? The Cult had a thing against many in the MLE, myself included. I worked alongside the department head at that time, and the others, to help take down I'signy and Geverik. And I wish we had caught them all. That's it."
Was that enough truth for her? Was that enough to show that the article couldn't be trusted? It depended. On if she trusted his words.
Tucking his hands in his pockets, he rested his head back against the wall and turned his eyes away from her. "I'm afraid, that's all I can say for sure. In regards to Rainey, to the Cult returning, I don't know. I hope it's not true, but I'm not jumping to any conclusions. The Prophet has earned no favors of my trust."
His gaze returned to her, considering her quietly for a long moment. "I was referring to Legend and Aron. Rainey and I are...convenient scapegoats should, Merlin forbid, something happen to them." He supposed that was still a 'victim' in a manner of speaking, but he was more concerned about the actual victims identified. "So, it seems to me more convenient and purposeful, than personal."
But then again, perhaps he was wrong. But if it was a personal attack, there were other, easier ways to get to him than his credibility with the MLE. Either way, her questions did a good job stirring up the unease in his gut again. "In any case, I think you would be wise to be cautious in placing too much weight in the attempts to discredit our department. Especially attempts so poorly founded." It was nice to have some of the pieces fit together, whether it helped Genevieve to understand the Prophet's version of the truth or just for her to understand the inner workings of Dakest better. Unfortunately, it didn't resolve their issue at hand, which continued to frustrate the blond Auror. She paced the landing twice before speaking again.
"I'm not great at being cautious, and I'm not keen on waiting to see what's real and what isn't. I think we need at least a tentative course of action. At the very least, I think we need to form a plan of protection for your victims and for the Minister. Extra protective details, security protocols... passwords, changing up their entrances and exits from the building. I'd feel better if we weren't waiting for the other shoe to drop."
