I love Vinnie and one day I want to marry her." Probably not what she wanted to hear but it was true. Who wanted to hear that their ex was in love with someone else? But he wanted his friend back. "Well you're going to be away anyway for your job and my school. You promise? Holidays and owls?"
"You know dad better than that." James laughed and wrapped his arm around Zoe in a hug.
She snorted at his description of her running around with a bucket and putting out fires. "I wouldn't be surprised if that wasn't true." she said with a laugh. "I don't expect to go back there again" she said quietly "That's over." She'd known that from the moment he'd told her he'd kissed Vinnie. Just...wished she'd known that before that even. Like last fall. She just nodded at the part of wanting to marry her one day. That's how things went, wasn't it? Fall in love, move on to bigger and better things in life? "Of course I promise" she said softly. "I wouldn't want it any other way." And that really was the truth. Not even the fact of wanting it back the way it was. Because she knew long before, that was over. Not because she didn't trust him? But because he'd found someone else that he cared about more.
She grinned and shrugged "You can always hope" she said with a smile and hugged him back.
