It said something when people got in earlier than their bosses, or earlier than anyone for that matter. Keener, workaholic, troubled or insomniac. Sabel could tick off the list which of those applied to him, but it was harder doing so for Simon.

The man was the first thing that Sabel noticed when he pushed open the door to the office, tray of coffees in both hands, breathing deep the familiar old-paper smell of the space. That, and the personal raincloud that the guy had hanging over his head. A glance about told him that no one else had arrived yet, so they had a few minutes before they would have to pile into the conference room.

Walking quietly up behind his friend's chair, Sabel reached over the man's shoulder, holding the coffee trays out in front of him. "On the left are plain blacks: the first two with sugar and cream, the second two straight black. On the right we have the coffee for the kiddo's: mochas and lattes and all those fancy things. You, early riser, get first dibs."

In other words, welcome back.
