Ask some different sorts of questions to make small talk? Why not?!
"Certainly. Would be bad form for me to send you away after all your huffing and puffing to get up here," he chuckled as he set his magazine down. "December 4, 2046....did you already calculate your own, er, Major Cycles?"
Toby allowed himself a little laugh too, vaguely wondering if that was some sort of pun, because Hufflepuff. If so... that was very good.
But WHEW. Relief. Airey was cool with it, which meant that Toby wasn't going to have to go charging around the castle on the lookout for someone else. He gave a huge sigh of relief, smiled a little wider, and wrote down and started reducing on his parchment even as he spoke.
"Yeah, we didn't interpret them yet. I peeked a little at the number meanings but I think we're just finding the numbers." He wondered if maybe interpreting them might be the homework. Hopefully it was, because Toby had a knack for that part, after all.
"Mine were... nine, seven, and seven." Wait, no... saying numbers out loud was making him get all confused. He crossed a couple things out and quickly corrected them.

Airey MiddleName Flamsteed
4th December 2046
December = 9 12
7 1 + 2 = 3
Cycle 1 = 3
04
0 + 4 = 4
Cycle 2 = 4
2046
2 + 0 + 4 + 6 = 12
1 + 2 = 3
Cycle 3 = 3
"Okay," Toby said, finishing up and glancing back over the parchment to double check.
"I think that's right. Yours are... three, four, and three. If that... y'know, means anything to you." Soph had been a little sarky about him telling her what hers were when he saw her earlier, but Toby was putting that down to her headache.
WHEW. More relief, 'cause now he was done. That had been... relatively painless.
