In the chaos that was all the extra bravery going down in the Common Room and another sucker jumping through the window every half a second, Maddox almost didn't notice the greeting offered with his eyes locked on the window like that. You...would never get him doing that....ever.

The man cleared his throat, pushing aside any looks of distraction and offered the young man a nod and a smile albeit forced under the conditions of knowing the heights these students were jumping from. "Good evening. Not eager to have a go at it yourself?"

SPOILER!!: Zander XD

Who knows, maybe they'd take pity on him and give him a few extra points 'cause he was a 'nice guy' to get that E he needed. Worth a shot, right?

So yuuuup. Making his way over to them right now, actually. "Hi, uh, I'm Zander Adair and you're uh, both new Professors this year, right?" He had seen them at the staff table, riiiiiiight? Just checking. Didn't need to be totally mortified here, people. Though, he couldn't remember what subjects they were in charge of. If it was Herbology, then he already had something against you, so hopefully not that one. Everything else was safe though. Heh. But, they didn't need to know that yet. "Welcome to Hogwarts by the way!" He would add a 'and Gryffindor' in there too, but if they were in the Common Room now, he figured they must've had some previous exposure to the house. So that would be saved for another time.

What's this? A badged one making his way over. How...responsible. Maddox's eyes fixed on the boy at his approach, noting what might have been anxiety in the way he walked but of what the boy was anxious, he couldn't say he knew. Didn't really matter either, the man could use a distraction from the concept of jumping from this dangerous height. Honestly, whose great idea was it to make such a thing as heights ANYWAY??

At the greeting Maddox studied the boy for another moment before giving a regrettable shake of his head. " 'Fraid you've wasted your greeting, son. I'm the new Caretaker. Mer, here, is the new Professor. Your Head of House brought me here to check that the ropes are workin' fine but I see he's already got you lot jumping so there's nothing I can really do now except maybe enjoy the food then turn in early." He glanced around the room just for the heck of it then looked to the boy again.

"You're one of them fancy Prefects, right? You'll let me know if anything needs repairing?"

"An odd summer it was Miss..." Didn't know her name. Shame that. "Spent it chasing werewolves through the Highlands. Nearly lost my head a few times." He lied with a grin. "I trust yours was equally eventful?"

In truth it had been an odd summer, for many reasons but...werewolves would never be one of them. Canines were a no on his list, a BIG no. Filthy creatures.

Another one by the window presumably all for the ridiculous purpose of jumping. Didn't any of them have eyes functioning enough to see the drop could kill them if the rope decided it was done for the night? Good Merlin by now it was getting late, he reckoned you couldn't even see the floor unless your face was a few inches from it.

"Hello." He replied, watching her, just watching but occasionally his eyes would flicker to the window. "Are you the one manning the window tonight?" He'd have thought Airey would pick someone with a little more arm muscle going for them...just in case.

"Oh but as a new Professor you probably don't know this but it is tradition to let them go first" without another word he jumped back in to the room and grabbed his arm. "Right AJ?" he asked her. He could use some help trying to scare the man.

Kevin was talking to the cute professor. AJ didn't let her facial expressions show that anything out of the ordinary was going on inside her head. Instead, without missing a beat she agreed with Kevin. "He's right, professor." She could have just left it at that, but it didn't seem as convincing as she would like it to be. "You wouldn't want to go breaking tradition at your new job, would ya?" No pressure, but this was lion territory. Go big or go home.
WHY did the students of this castle feel the need to GRAB him when making their points. First the little Ravenclaw trying to drag him back into the Great Hall during the feast and now THIS one trying to kill him and his friend was trying to help. Sweet Circe this really wasn't his day, was it??

"Fancy tradition but I'm not a Professor." He said, removing the boy's hand while being careful to NOT look at the window OR think about the height he'd go splat from. Heights. Always had to be heights. Why couldn't they jump from the ground floor, eh? "Just the Caretaker here to make sure the rope doesn't do you in but a couple of you have already tried it and it's safe enough for my liking."

He took another step away from the two and the window, taking on a casual stance and sliding his hands comfortably into his pockets. "The Headmistress will be pleased to know you lot will live to see another day. My work here is done. " Get away kids. Shoo. He wasn't jumping.

SPOILER!!: Airey omg

Which was going to be incredibly difficult given their histories together. "Welcome back," he saluted the two, his eyes falling on Maddox while his nose wrinkled. No furry business, alright? As long as he didn't go all feline here in the common room the astronomer wouldn't force the man to...

...well well WELL....

Wasn't this an interesting proposition coming from Mr. Hirase.

And since Maddox was the sort of person to set a sneakoscope off just by breathing, NOT TO MENTION THE ASTRONOMER NEEDED REVENGE, he was going to just go right along with the fourth year. "Yes, did I not include that in my message?" he asked, oh-so-innocently, as he made his way over to the Charms professor and laid an arm around the man's shoulders. "And since you are late and students are already enjoying yourselves, we must hurry up and get it done. You too, Meribe---Professor Moxley."

He figured Meriberry would just play along - and may have completely forgotten Maddox's fear of heights. Whoops.

And then Airey happened.

Maddox wasted no time in removing the man's hand from his shoulder before this got completely out of hand. "As fun as this all sounds, it's like I've explained to the boy. Not a Professor. No need for me to do the jump. I was here to check the ropes and that one kid screaming my eardrums off just proved that they're functional." And a COUPLE steps taken away from the astronut for his own safety because Airey was the type to throw you through a window...or so he would tell everyone and worse if he had to.

"I can just...uh...enjoy the food--I can help the students enjoy the food. It's not problem for me. Honestly."

Funny choice of wording given everything he'd done all night but yes, honestly. Honestly, Airey better back away from him before they both regretted it. Not hyperventilating either. The subtle but strained breathing...the air was just a little thin up here was all.
