The first thing you do when in a place you are unfamiliar with is try and find exits and make escape plans for when you get in trouble and need an escape plan. Of course. So Dante was on some floor and by this weird statue. This weird statue which might have a secret passage. But probably everyone knew about it and it was a dud.
Dante walked back and forth stroking his imaginary beard thinking if he should try and see if there was a passage. Sure why not. He knocked on it once and nothing.
Well that was actually disappointing.
Even though he was expecting nothing.
