And he appreciated the compliment, hence the smile and chuckle and soon followed.

One thing about Airey Flamsteed was that he tended to feed off other people's energies - minus the negative ones like boredom and disinterest that occasional occurred in his lesson when he got carried away with an explanation - so right now his nervous energy was feeding off Miss Brown's nervous energy. Rubbing the back of his neck, he tugged on the blonde hair his fingers could grasp and looked sheepishly down at the floor. First Valentines that were unfortunately connected to astrology and now this?!

Were students trying to kill him with kindness? Kindness and speaking to him about personal issues?

But then he was suddenly struck with the memory of his 4-year-old self seeing a certain alien intellectual on the television. A Vulcan revered for his unusual persona and intellect... His papa had been right. While his heartstrings were metaphorically being pulled right now, he did not allow his emotions to get the better of him. So instead of a misty eyed gaze, his smile widened and he took a few more steps forward to place a sincere hand on Miss Brown's shoulder. "Thank you, Miss Brown. That means a lot and I am truly touched."

No shoulder pat this time. Miss Cambridge had taught him that that just was not his thing.

Awwwwww. The usually eccentric, exuberant professor looked so embarrassed! It made Sophie smile a little to see him so sheepish, and if she knew him better on a personal level, she might've given him a nice pat on the shoulder or something to make him feel better.

It didn't seem to matter that she hadn't patted his shoulder, though, for soon enough, he was reaching out to her and placing a hand on her shoulder. Sophie grinned big at that, fighting to keep his gaze without appearing embarrassed, both secondhand and for having expressed such genuinely kind feelings and having it acknowledged directly. She didn't like being a mushy gushy person with anyone but a select few, and especially not with a professor like Flamsteed.

For a moment, she was just smiling up at him, happy that he was happy and processing how awkward it was for the both of them - until she finally shrugged casually and offered, "Y'don't need to thank me. I should be thanking you for being so great and making Astronomy so easy to be interested in. There are some classes," she wasn't going to name any, "that are a lot less fun and interesting than they could be because the professor's dull or mean." Liiiiike Transfiguration. Mostly just Transfiguration, actually.

"But yours rises above the rest for all the good reasons possible." Maybe except Potions, but... "I mean it." Her tone was very matter-of-fact - she wasn't being soft and intentionally cheesy with him. "So... stick around for awhile, okay? I couldn't imagine what it'd be like to have anyone but you teach Astronomy. Bet it'd be outrageously underwhelming." She did move forward enough to reach out and nudge the professor playfully with an elbow to defuse tension this time and smiled brightly up at him.

"That's all I wanted to say, though." So she'd leave him alone. He could go back to his very important business or whatever he'd been doing.
