All he wants right now is to go home and tell them all about their lessons, his professors, and his friends. The boy got distracted though when he went through a pile of parchments with Mordred’s handwriting. All of it were about Potions, and it was some of his own experiments he did when he was still in Hogwarts, and later in Durmstrang. Ethan flipped through it until he found a parchment with his old school’s insignia. It says there, ‘Memory Potion – (pending experiment)’. The Slytherin smiled as he glanced at Simon’s empty bed. Ethan’s mind raced with more ideas and theories.
…
Days prior, Ethan talked to Simon over breakfast about meeting in the Potion’s Laboratory, because he wanted to try and brew a potion that might benefit him greatly. There was no guarantee of course that it’ll work, but that was the point of research and experimentation, yes? Ethan also knew that they could have asked Cosgrach’s help, but the boy thought of doing it first on their own, see how far they could go, and if they get stuck then that’s the time he’d ask for help. Besides, the man seems to be extra grumpy these days. Ethan knew better not to disturb his friend. Mordred gets grumpy at times, and he’d always tell the boy to shut up and stop asking him questions because he wanted to be alone with his thoughts. Ethan assumes that he might get the same reaction from the potion’s master, what with Simon and him being capable of doing the basics of potion making.
So yes, maybe they’ll just ask help if the potion gets too complex for them, or if they accidentally set the laboratory on fire. Which, the boy wasn’t sure if Cosgrach would be happy? Extra warmth, you see. Anyway. Ethan found the laboratory, signed his name and the time and made his way inside the room.
“How are you holding up?” Ethan asked as he placed his satchel on the table and got his potions kit out and notebook.
“…I’m used to this weather you see, but snowing inside the school? I think it’s too much.” He said as he pointed at one of the corners of the room, now with icicles hanging. Is the Headmistress aware? Ethan assumed yes, because he didn’t see any professors along the way. Perhaps they’re now discussing the matter with her.
“Anyway, my Watson! I’ve got something for you!” Ethan stuck out his tongue as he rummaged deep into his satchel for the parchment.
“Tadaaaaah!” the Slytherin sat beside Simon and gave him the parchment containing the instruction and ingredients to make the
Memory Potion. “There’s a whole range of Memory Potions out there, but I think this is the closest formula your mum needs.” He said as he got his notebook and opened it.
“Also, I think we need to alter some of the ingredients because ‘semi-deadly nightshade’? We don’t have that in our kit, or have access to it here.” He said as he pointed at the storeroom.
“I’m thinking Jobberknoll feathers should be added…and some ingredients from the Wit-Sharpening Potion, as well as the Calming Draught. You see, the former makes us think clearly, and the latter could help us think straighter. That should render your mom to concentrate, yes?” Ethan can only imagine the results, but isn’t sure whether his assumptions will make the potion work.
Simon wasn’t sure if he wanted to make the potion anymore. After his last conversation with Cosgrach about how difficult it was to use potions to improve someone’s memory, he was feeling less confident with the whole ‘brewing the best memory potion’ to save his mother. He just didn’t know if it would work out. They were thirteen after all but Ethan had said that he had a couple of old recipes from Mordred’s school years so that was a little bit relieving to hear. Brrrr... 'Twas rather chilly in here. He rubbed his hands together, trying to warm them up.
Speaking of Ethan, his Mordaunt friend appeared out of nowhere. Simon smiled. “
Hey mate. I’m alright. Just a little chilly. A few things have been on my mind: the Cold Ones, the freezing weather, and…” he paused and then added one little word. “
Girls.” He pulled a miserable face and then brightened up all of a sudden when he watched Ethan unpack his bag. “
How about you? Have you seen Josie?” He knew how his mate felt about that particular Ravenclaw and he wondered whether or not the two had found time to hang out.
His blue eyes widened and brightened up when Ethan presented the Memory Potion to him. Cosgrach’s words of warning played in his mind but he ignored them and just beamed at Ethan. Then he chuckled as he eyed the ingredients. Yep, Yep, all looked good to him. A smile burst onto his lips. “
That’s brilliant, Holmes!” he said at first and nodded a he listened to Ethan explain the ingredients that they didn’t need and the ones that they could add. Yep, yep. All of those options made sense. Simon would have suggested sneaking into the storeroom to find some extra ingredients (or rather just asking Cosgrach); however, the boy didn’t want to lose points or lose face with one of the nicest Professors at the school. Simon nodded again at Ethan’s point that it should render her to concentrate. “
It should do the trick and more, but how do we know if the potion works?” he asked as his brow furrowed.
