But did she really leave him just a note? Likely story, cold one. But Zander's got you all figured out. Sort of. Either way he wasn't going to let his guard down just yet. Had to do some investigating that's all. Just scope out the story and see if she really was just a student. But he couldn't let her know that he was investigating. Because if she really was a cold one she'd see that and put on her shield of lies. Maybe that's what their protective armor was made of? Lies. Eh, seemed plausible. So, instead of raising his eyebrows again, he attempted a laugh. Because that note thing, if it really was a thing, was kind of funny right? Except his laugh totally sounded forced and not natural and ahem, oops. Casually turning it into a cough instead the boy decided to speak before he made things even worse, "What did they note say?"
..... So evidently one History of Magic lesson does not make you a good actor. Note taken.
Hmm she was still sticking with the story. Maybe she wasn't lying after all. But wait, he had never heard of this Tobias Tempus character. WHO was he? Or what, if she was talking about one of her other cold one friends. WAS HE IN THE CASTLE TOO? Or worse, was he on his way to the trophy room? What if this was an ambush!? But he's only fourteen. Spare his life. He's got to finish that divination homework before he dies, can't let Professor Morgan think he bailed. And then, he had to confess his love for Beautiful Bentley. She must know why he was all weird last time they talked. Make amends with the evil Zahra, eh maybe not that one. But STILL. He had so much to do and so little time.
Wait. O__o He was totally getting ahead of himself here. He probably wasn't in any immediate danger... And if he was... He'd be thinking of an escape plan in the meantime. "I-I don't think I've met you before," Even more of a reason why she'd be a cold one. MHM. But nope, clean slate. No suspicion. Okay a little. "I'm Adair." WAIT, THAT'S NOT RIGHT. "I mean, I'm Zander. What I meant is... I'm uh, Zander Adair." Oops. All this cold one talk was making him nervous. But this way, if she was a cold one and she did freeze his heart, then everyone would know his name and what a brave soldier he was. Sophie was torn between finding this suspicious, nervous boy humorous and thinking he was a nut. She could tell something was up with him and he was forcing a certain sort of facade, but she couldn't figure out his angle. Was he terrified of pretty girls? Did he think she had just robbed Fuller or hurt him? Had he been in here doing something he shouldn't have been?
She shot a casual glance to the trophies and plaques nearest to him, but found nothing wrong with them. Hmmmm.
"Just some stuff. Top secret," she told him with a mischievous sort of grin. There had been mentioning of Thompson, but Sophie felt that it wasn't good to talk about them, especially not around some kid she'd just met. What if he was a blabber-mouth? What if he spread gossip and started rumors about people? She didn't want to contribute to more gossip about Pavy. No, no. She liked them too much. "Can't have you ratting me out." That, too.
After taking another moment to listen for footsteps, Sophie relaxed, assuming she was safe. She rolled away from the door, now sprawled out on her stomach facing the boy with her head propped up by her hands, resting her elbows on the floor. Adair was a weird first name, she thought at first, but then Zander ended up being weird, too. "M'Sophie Brown." Once again, she was sure to specify that she was not the third year Sophie Newell, in case he hadn't met her but had heard of that one. No, no. Brown.
"We're in the same year," she supplied helpfully to him to identify who she was, having pulled her hands out from under her chin to examine her fingernails. "We've got plenty of classes together, so it was only a matter of time till we met." He HAD to have known who she was at least from potions class, yeah? Culloden would be the first to say she was the best third year potioneer. Wasn't like he tried to hide his pride in her - the man certainly wasn't subtle about who his favorites were.
After a beat, she gave him an amused grin and asked, her tone teasing, "Are you always this jittery?"
