And so, Toby listened. At first he stayed in that same position, his brain taking in all of this new information and throwing it at his separate anxieties until, at last, things started to sort of calm down in his head.

When Soph brought up the whole thing about putting a label on things (she totally got it), Toby finally lifted his head to look at her, and simply watched her speak and listened to everything, relieved that it was all making perfect sense. So she understood. She understood that, in all honesty, it wasn't the concept of being in a ~relationship~ that was any sort of issue, but rather the idea that it had to be officially dubbed as anything. With labels came pressure.

It was only now she was saying all of this that he felt a wave of calm wash over him, and suddenly, he knew exactly what to say.

"I've got an idea," he finally spoke up again a few moments after Soph had finished speaking, using those moments to think exactly how he was going to put this. "Everything I feel like a relationship would be like, I already feel that way about you. I like you a whole lot, I love spending time with you, I feel more comfortable around you than with almost anyone," because his grandmother held that top spot, of course "we have fun and we hang out loads and everything feels super natural with you, and you're my number one and will be until we're a hundred and fifty. For real this time." Toby let out a little grin there. He meant it; she was totally stuck with him. But what he was trying to say was that, in his mind, they were already in a relationship without having to discuss it. For him the problem only came from having to give it that whole official seal, and THAT felt like a step into the unknown...

"So here's my idea." At this point, Toby shifted so he was now sitting cross-legged on the floor of the broom closet, turned so that he was sitting at a better angle (all the better to look at Soph), and began bouncing both his knees with that same restless energy. "We go for it. Just do it. We make it 'official', and I'm your boyfriend and you're my girlfriend." Was she following so far? Most likely; it wasn't a difficult concept after all. "On the condition that, at least to each other, we're still best friends, first and foremost."

Toby paused for a second, still bouncing his knees slightly to what had been the rhythm of his voice, before finishing.

"I just think that our friendship is what's most important. I don't ever want us to stop being best friends, even if we end up married and with a bunch of tiny Sophies and Tobys." Heh. That was a weird mental image. "Let's never lose that."

Things WOULD change, as they had the habit of doing, and that was okay. But what was stopping them from being being best friends AND being ~together~? Probably nothing.

Ahem. "So... whatcha think?"

Sophie brought her knees up to her chest when she was finished giving her spiel and wrung her hands nervously as Tobes began to reply. She forced herself to meet his gaze, breathing slowly and deeply after having possibly said too much. But Tobes looked sort of excited now, and she tried to process every one of his words, but there was a high-pitched buzzing in her ears from nerves that made her feel entirely too disoriented, and she thumped her head back against the wall, now looking at her knees.

She felt all the same things about him. Undoubtedly. But HEARING that he reciprocated those feelings instead of her just assuming... it brought all sorts of emotions to the surface that she had been trying to repress for the sake of their friendship. "Me too," she spoke softly, her throat tight and raspy to accompany her struggle of holding back happy tears. "You're my number one, too." And the thought of being with him for the next hundred and thirty-five years made her smile the biggest of smiles. What could be better than that?

As Toby adjusted his seating position, so did Sophie - she was curious about his tone, and sat forward, raising her eyebrows with interest at what he was going to say.

And oh, did he have something to say.

As soon as he said 'we go for it,' giddy giggles bubbled in her throat and she brought the back of her hand up to her mouth to try to cover it up while he went on. He was her boyfriend and she was his girlfriend. HEHEHEHEHEHE.

The concept was beautiful.

The giggles kept coming, but she was better at quieting them, pressing her lips together firmly in a smile until he was done. Except at the part where he joked about them having kids, which made her go bug-eyed at him and she burst into laughter. YEAH RIGHT.

She took a moment to gain some composure, straightening herself out and wiping the smile off her face in an attempt to be mature and serious. Didn't go all that well. "So... even if we decide we don't want to be girlfriend-boyfriend some day, we'll promise to still always be besties? 'Cause that's what we'll base our whole relationship on, yeah? Friendship? Always and forever? ... Y'promise to always keep this in mind?" She felt the same way he did, obviously, but she needed to verbalize it, and even extended her pinky finger out to make it official and certain. "Besties first and forever, girlfriend-boyfriend second?"
