Astronomy Homework 1.1 Dani's Citrus Duck Spawn | Mama Giraffe | Lemon PATch | Pushed the Red Button He was no good at this subject, so Dima had opted not to do this assignment with a friend and save himself the embarrassment. There were no pets in his possession either, but he'd made himself a really spiffy paper toad. It had sat quietly on his head all the while he gathered materials, and the kid had grown quite fond of it.
What? Didn't Professor Top Hat have a pet rock? It was FINE.
Along with his homemade audience, he also carried with him an especially fat watermelon. It had a thick black line drawn around it (fake equator for the win!) as well as a long stick running vertically through its juicy inside. That was been the axis on which his precious Earth!fruit rotated. The item had been put together in his dorm, though Dima had eventually decided to give his demonstration elsewhere. Maybe it was the astronomical influence or something, but the Planetarium seemed like the BEST spot.
And it wasn't too far. Arriving at his destination in minutes, he at once began setting up. His paper toad was set in a seat on one side of the room while the little Eagle traveled to the other, climbing atop his own chair and drawing his wand. Game face on. Culloden's potion had really helped him with learning new spells, and Dima had even gotten to learn some more advanced spells, one of which he was about to perform. For... a piece of paper. Which was good enough for him! "Lumos Maxima!" As he spoke the incantation, he flicked his wand, drew it back, and flicked again. The movements were a little shaky but still sufficient, as a blinding flash of white light had appeared at his wand tip. He gave the wand another flick, and the orb went flying away, floating in the air before him.
Ta-da! Lo and behold, a sun.
NOW he was ready. "Good evening, Mr. Toadsworth," he greeted his paper pet, going so far as to bow. In character here! "I assume you know who I am- Dmitriy Toussaint, professor of... er...... space stuff! We have gathered here today so that I may share with you a recent discovery I have... um, discovered..... about space stuff-ish Earth stuff!" Official, wasn't he? He thought so. Raising his watermelon, Dima beamed at the toad. He HAD this, okay?
The tiny Toussaint pointed with an even tinier finger. "THIS is Earth and THIS is it's equator. The line going through the planet is the axis which it rotates on." Not knowing fancy spells like Flamsteed had, he just spun it around with his hands. "But the axis' daddy wasn't tough on the axis and didn't STRAIGHTEN him OUT, so he's all tilted. 23 and something something degrees, see?" Did he see? Was Mr. Toadsworth understanding? Dima tilted his watermelon for the pet's benefit before continuing. "How much light the sun gives off doesn't change, but more light hits the spots that are tilted toward the sun now! So the part not near the sun experiences winter," Dima stuck the watermelon in the vicinity of his light orb and pointed at the shadowy part, making a frowny face, "and the part tilted at the sun is in summer!" He fanned himself. Whew.
Parading around in his chair for a bit so that his watermelon could 'orbit' the sun, Dima soon began cheering for himself 'cause Mr. Toadsworth wouldn't. And he continued to do so until his light source died.
Productive demonstration, huh?
