You definitely couldn't believe everything you heard because Maddie's brothers told her ALL KINDS of junk and most of it was not true.
Toby. "Hi, Toby." Maddie smiled a little and straighted up, taking the older boys hand in hers and giving it a firm shake. Her mum always said you could tell a lot about a person from their handshake and Maddie hoped that HER shake showed how strong and cool and determined she was. COULD HE TELL FROM HER SHAKE? The small brunette watched him in hopes that his expression would give something away.
...And then an owl happened.
Maddie raised her eyebrows a little and watched as the letter SPOKE to Dima. She'd heard about howlers before but THIS one seemed SUPER nice and PROUD and the small brunette couldn't help but think Dima was lucky that someone cared enough about him to send something like this. SHE'D got a typed up note from her Dad that simply said something about enjoying her term and the only handwritten part was his signature. ...Yeah.
So after Dima got done swatting at the letter, Maddie reached over and picked it up off the dock, smoothing it out and handing it back to the boy. "It might be embarrassing but it's also nice that you got a letter." Maddie tried not to let on how she was feeling but her eyes might have looked a bit sad. Just like the owl's eyes, actually. Little guy looked like he wanted something from him but Maddie didn't speak owl! Lucky for THEM, Toby did.
"Got any more food in there, Toby?" Was his other pocket full of SWEETS? HMM?

He shook the boys hand.... regularly. Er... were you supposed to shake them a certain way? Like Maddie, for instance, looked like she was gonna rip his arm off. Maybe it just seemed that way to Dima and his weird and gentle insides... but Merlin. He was glad she never shook his hand.
"I know it's nice! Aunt Cela is my favorite." She was also the loudest, but Dima didn't mention that part. It was pretty obvious by that reverse howler how she was, right? And he would have passed Maddie's comment off as one of polite acknowledgement if he hadn't made eye contact while speaking. But the sad look on her face was hard to miss for him, given how easily he picked up on those kinds of things. "Didn't you get a letter too?"
If she had, hopefully it had been delivered by a family owl instead of by the post office, 'cause they'd have probably been fed right. Did they starve their owls in Diagon Alley or something? Dima watched the Toby guy feed him, lucky that SOMEONE thought to keep food on them.
A knut would have probably been better, little owl. Just saying.
That was a mighty firm handshake from little Maddie. Tobias had the grace to look impressed, but hopefully not TOO impressed. Didn't want to seem like he was being condescending, after all, when he only wanted to make new friends and help the younger kids feel welcome here.
Toby shook his head at the question about food.
"Nope, only crackers today." Which implied, of course, that on other days he would have different food, which was entirely true.
"You learn to carry around food with you in this place. It's so big, some people find they work up an appetite just from trying to find a certain room."
He didn't know if it was best to try not to notice the sad look on Maddie's face or not, because he knew for certain that he HATED people pointing out if he was upset, but was that the same for everything else? Toby wasn't sure. He looked uncertainly between the pair, and briefly considered telling a certain little anecdote, before deciding completely against it. For reasons. Instead, he focused on the squid.
"I've not met him personally, no," Toby revealed, glancing past the Ravenclaw pair and out over the surface of the lake.
"But in my second year Professor Airey got him to help people swim out of the lake, so I know he's nice. We were flying up there," he added in explanation, pointing up at the sky above the lake.
"For an Astronomy class activity."
And............ hmmmm. Talk of Airey was giving Toby ideas.
"Do you two like exploring, then? Trying out new things and all that?" =========================
Toby had been out here for a while now, but was regretting absolutely nothing. He was keeping an eye on the table and the FOOD and hoping that nobody nicked anything because today was Sophie's REAL LIFE ACTUAL BIRTHDAY. He wanted her birthday to be just as special as she'd made his, so he was 100% okay with waiting out here. Every time he got bored, Toby would simply get up and spin in circles for a little while, because that was always fun.
He was dressed preeeeeeeeeetty smartly, given that it was SUCH a special occasion. Black trousers, white shirt, black tie. Too much? Never.
Lalalala, spinniiiiiiiiiiiiiing.
