"I'm an only child," Hayden answered. "What's it like having siblings?" She'd witnessed siblings together several times, but sometimes they fought constantly and sometimes they acted like best friends. It depended on the people, probably. So she wondered how Kate and her brothers got along. "No pets either. Well we have an aquarium in the kitchen but fish don't really count because they don't require much work. I've never had a dog or a cat or anything." She didn't know why, her parents just must not have wanted one. "If you could, what kind of pet would you get?"
Was astronomy her favorite subject? Kate didn't really know. Sure, she liked learning about constellation stories and how space worked, but there were so many other things to learn. Like history and spells and stuff. Kate shrugged. "Maybe for now, but I just like learning everything!" Mostly in books, though. Sitting through hours and hours of lectures wasn't as much fun as reading in books.
Hayden was really into the questions and answers, Kate thought. "Having siblings is great! It's like built-in friends! They pick on you a lot, but they also defend you and don't let anyone else pick on you. My oldest brother likes to show me how to build things. We have paper airplane contests, but he doesn't like it when I try to hang out with his friends. And my other brothers let me play sports with them, especially if their friends are over and they have an odd number." Ahh, and her closest brother. They were homework buddies. Kate usually had to help
him out, even though he was a little bit older. She hoped he'd do okay in school without her.
And as to what kind of pet she wanted, that was easy. "I want a dog. It'd be like having another brother, but he'd be willing to hang out with me anytime I want instead of only sometimes."
"What's it like being an only child?"
