Below is some advice from our top finishers in Round 5 and Round 6!

Our second-to-second-to last third-place winner, Becky, had this great advice for us on how she made her third-place icon in 1w1p: round five. Check it out!

SPOILER!!: Becky's advice
Layer up. If you're trying to do some colouring, use an adjustment layer, if you're trying to add something to the graphic, use another layer. This ensures that if you want to get rid of one thing on the graphic, you can always just delete that layer instead of having to restart. Layering up can help too.

Without colour balance, it would look like this:

Without vibrance, it would look like this:

Without selective colour, it would look like this:

The final icon looks like this:

To get to adjustment layers (layers that will affect the layers beneath them without changing anything on them), go to 'Layer > Adjustment Layer'

Thanks, Becky! Now we have a tip from Govoni, who won our second to last round, 1w1p: round six!

SPOILER!!: A Tip from Kerri!
Pro Tip: I love for my graphics to really POP in color. So, the very first thing I do when beginning an avvie (or any graphic, really) is play with the EXPOSURE. I use Adobe Photoshop CS6 (but I assume GIMP would work in a similar fashion). To open the EXPOSURE tab, look to the top and go under the WINDOW dropbox. After doing this, select ADJUSTMENTS. This will open a panel of 16 icons to the right of the screen. Select the EXPOSURE icon (top row, fourth one over) and we'll get started.

For my avvie, the starting image was rather dull. So, to make the colors stand out more, I simply increased the EXPOSURE bit to +0.99 (making the image somewhat lighter) and then decreased the OFFSET to -0.0207 (adding a clean contrast, while maintaining the quality of the colors). An example of the effect is below.

TADA! Super easy to do and instantly brings any graphic to life (without over doing it).

Thanks, ladies! NEW ROUND COMING UP in a fewwwwww.
