It didn't.
She blinked then tried to rummage through her mind for some sort of educated idea. "Okay, well...I know that Valerian causes sleep, so it wouldn't really awaken the mind if we used too much of it," she said. They were trying to brew a potion to remember things, not sleep through them. "So maybe we could add in something to produce the opposite affect. Something like...billywigs stings." If the stings were anything like the creatures they were attached to, they should wake things up and get them going--therefore good for a Forgetfulness Potion.
She only looked toward the professor for a single second before plucking two stings out her kit and dropping them into the brew. One for each Valerian sprig. ...
Cosgrach smiiiiiiled and his eyes shone with pride. "Perfect, Miss Newell." So she WAS Lafay's grand daughter. Good. And she had the courage too, so Cosgrach didn't stop her as she added two of the stings. "So the sting is correct, but adding two isn't. This is a harmless potion so you wouldn't be hurt even if you added a jar of it, but just because we added two extra sprigs doesn't mean you have to add two of the counter ingredient. What you should do next time is to add one or a small portion if it's an uncountable object, and see how the potion reacts." He watched her potion. He knew what it would do, he wanted her to see it. "See how it didn't react? Shows it's the right thing to add, but inadequate. So we add more slooowly." He picked a few stings and added them one by one -
The potion started to get a darker shade of green and looked generally more calm, so he stopped adding the stings. "One last question before you can go," he put the excess stings back into her kit, "which step would you go on from?"
But before he got to listen to her answer, Ian said something to him so he turned to the boy, indicating Sophie to wait. Quote:

He really hoped that was correct. He was correct too, but less brave. "Correct." He just wished Ian knew it without spying on other students, but he would accept this much too. "So how many feathers will you add?" "So the difference between your potions would be, if I were to drink them, I would remember details better but my mind would be too tired to bring them to surface," he was addressing to Ian, and he turned to Sophie next, "whereas with yours, I would forget things easily but my mind would be less foggy." Did they see the difference? He hoped they did.
