Sander sighed and tried to disperse the sad thoughts by thinking of something else. The Jarveys! Now where were they? Sander walked around in the play pen and searched for them. He saw movement first before he heard the spew of words that soon followed. He chuckled as he heard what they had to say. If his mother were here, she would have washed their mouths out with soap.
"They're heeeerrrreee," Sander motioned to Alex as he moved in the direction from where the voices were coming from. The closer he got, the louder the voices became. Sander reached into the pail he had brought with him, pulled out a dead rat and threw the carcass onto the ground in front of him.
Then he waited to see whether the Jarveys would make an appearance.
Alex was looking at Sander when his mood seemed to change suddenly. She wondered if she had said something to upset him, but couldn't imagine what it might have been. She watched him carefully, hoping to figure out why he now seemed so sad. Alex tried to recall what they had talked about. Being a hero, favorite animals, animals being confined, how lucky the animals were to have him........ahhhh she had nothing. She finally gave up and decided to ask.
"What's wrong Sander?"
Ohhhh, the Jarveys were here. Alex had heard them and they were
raw. How could such language come out of those little animals? Alex laughed in amusement.
"Do you have to be a seventh year to tend to the Jarveys? I can't imagine subjecting the firsties to that language." When Sander threw a rat onto the ground to bait the Jarveys, Alex cringed a bit. Not that she wasn't expecting it, but still...... Rats didn't give her the creeps like squirmy bugs, but they were just nasty. Rats she could deal with though, especially if they were dead. She knew it was only a matter of time before the Jarveys made an appearance.
