Ian saw the girl wipe away tears and leaned in to hear a little better. It didn't seem to work very well, so he placed his cane in an upright position so he could 'try' and settle himself on the floor next to her (since she didn't appear ready to get up). With some effort, he was able to sit next to her. He didn't really have any experience 'helping' people but figured she might like someone nearby.

Ian pondered a moment. "Why do you think you ruined the friendship? Did your friend say it was over?" Perhaps these questions were overly personal but he was new at all this friend thing. He watched her and then pulled out a handkerchief as she still seemed to need something to dab at her eyes with besides the heel of her palm.
