SPOILER!!: Head Girl Quidditch Player Hufflepuff Teenager Ella
[QUOTE=TakemetotheBurrow;11508470]Ella was just eyeing her fire crab shell curiously and thinking about Taco, the crab-not the food, when she heard a frazzled Fern whispering to her. The blonde glanced over at the younger badger and then into her cauldron, noting the lack of spoon and fire crab shell. ...Whoops.

"It'll be okay, yeah? We'll just scoop it out and see what happens? It is in there, right?" The shell and spoon, that is. "Here, take my spoon and scoop them out quickly and carefully. Maybe it'll still work." And after cleaning her spoon, the head girl handed it over and gave the younger girl a reassuring smile.

The potion still looked the same as Ella's so perhaps it was still salvageable. [QUOTE]

Fern watched Ella’s reaction anxiously, her hazel eyes wide; in her nervousness, it felt like the classroom was closing in on her. “Okay, okay,” the second year replied, jutting out her chin and nodding with determination. Ella knew what she was doing. If Ella said it would be okay, it would be okay. It would be okay. “Yes. I dropped it because that boy Bart,” Fern spat out the name, “distracted me. It was his fault!” Again Fern nodded, but this time more fervently. She wanted Ella to know that it was not her fault. She wanted Ella to think she was a potion-making genius. She wanted Ella to say, ‘Hey Fern, you’re so cool. At least as mature as a 13-year-old. At LEAST. We should have a slumber party in the common room and make DIY facials, and I’d totally let you help plan my wedding too.’

Returning Ella’s smile with more nodding, Fern accepted the spoon with the utmost severity and a very solemn, “Thank you.” Then, scrunching her nose in conversation, Fern fished for the shell. After several nerve-racking moments, she successfully extracted the shell, in addition to several little white feather pieces that stuck to the spoon. Putting the shell on a tissue, Fern returned to her cauldron for the spoon. This was a lot harder, and she ended up using Ella’s spoon and her wooden stirrer to retrieve it.

There. There. Fern exhaled all of the breath she had been holding. Then she set to cleaning the head girl’s spoon with a “Scourgify.”

“Thank you, Ella!” she whispered again, offering the spoon back.

"This is the most important step," he announced to make sure he got everyone's attention, "So listen carefully. You should wait for another minute and just cut the slug vertically in the meantime in two." So it should be two thin and long pieces instead of two short and fat ones. Then add the pieces but stay away from the cauldron as far as you can. If you’ve done everything correctly, the surface should explode harmlessly and start burning. Put it out with your breath ONLY, so you’d better hurry before the fire spreads to the whole surface." Got it? Breath and staying as far as possible and everything?

Fern didn’t meet Professor Culloden’s eyes as he gave the next set of directions. He hadn’t reprimanded her yet for dropping the spoon and the firecrab shell into her potion, and she was hoping that meant he hadn’t seen what happened.

When he finished talking, Fern made sure her knife was clean, and then she sliced the slug in two, flinching slightly in the process. Hopping out of her chair, the Hufflepuff took one slice in both hand, and standing far back, dropped them into the cauldron.

“Woah!” Fern exclaimed unconsciously as she watched the liquid surface expload, and she stared for a moment, open mouthed, as it began to burn. Half of the surface was covered in flames before she remembered she was supposed to blow it out, and letting out a squeak of realization, the 12-year-old scurried back onto her stool and extinguished the flames with her breath.
SPOILER!!: step 7-8, volunteers + Ella

Repeat that for four times, so in the end, you should have stirred for 16 times in total. Once done with stirring, the potion should be dark blue like a night sky. If it is so, you potion is ready." He grinned at them excitedly. They had made it!

"Now, Alice and Bart have already volunteered to demonstrate and share the feeling," he said as he looked at them, "and I want one more volunteer. Someone not from Gryffindor, please." Who was that courageous?

"Those who don't want to volunteer may add flobberworm’s mucus to keep it in their mouths better--it will solidify the potion. It's up to you how much or if, really, but don't add more than a tablespoon of it, and it's not my responsibility if you don't add and swallow some while breathing." So he was warning them. The rest was their responsibility.

"Please wait for the volunteers to share the feeling before trying the potion."

So, the third volunteer?
[QUOTE=TakemetotheBurrow;11508470]Was Fern doing okay? Ella glanced over at the little badger and smiled again, trying to be encouraging. Potions could be tough, she knew, and she'd help where she could. She was still a bit worried about the girl's potion, though. [QUOTE]

"Sorry, but three will be enough," he said to the other Hufflepuffs who wanted to be a volunteer too. He wasn't going to stop them if he still wanted to try it, of course.

"If the volunteers could drink one tablespoon of their potion, and describe the feeling to the class. Come in front if you want, or stay by your cauldron, but please get up so everyone can see you."

Then, he moved to the back of the class and watched with excitement.

He... probably had to apologise to Alice. Probably.

Wiping her brow with the sleeve of her robe, Fern glanced over at Ella and almost squealed because Ella was LOOKING at her, and even more than that, Ella was SMILING at her! But Fern had a lot of experience squashing her squeal urges thanks to hanging out with Elodie and Olly, so she simply returned the older Hufflepuff’s smile with a grin of her own. It didn’t dawn on the 12-year-old that her potion might be ruined due to her slip-up; Ella had said it would be okay, after all. And Ella couldn’t be wrong. So everything was perfect!

Turning away from the seventh year to listen to the professor, Fern’s eyes widened when Professor Culloden called for one more volunteer. Ooooh! OOOOH! Fern would volunteer! She raised her hand high in the air, eager to prove to him that she was NOT a sissy. She was easily just as brave as Bart. In fact, Fern was confident she was way braver than that mean Gryffindor.

But she wasn’t quick enough, and the 12-year-old dropped her hand, dreams of showing Bart up and proving to the whole class how awesome she was dashed. Letting out a disappointed sigh, Fern went back to preparing her potion. She added the eight drops of salamander blood and after cleaning her very messy spoon, completed the correct number of stirs.

Craning her neck, Fern looked in her cauldron. Was it dark blue? Like the sky? Fern thought so. She added the tablespoon of flobberworm mucus with a clean utensil. All done. She smiled proudly at her potion and began to start cleaning her tools and station.

He was going to get to drink the potion now!! Woohoo! This was cool, no awesome, no epic. He was so excited he couldn't even contain himself. Jumping from his seat he grabbed a clean tablespoon and swooped it into the cauldron then walked nice and not so calmly to the front of the room, because that was exactly where he was going to do this at.

Book boy would see what a wimp he was not.. see he was drinking the potion and it was going to go so well. Easy peasy! Stepping in front of everyone he turned. "AIGHT Looky looky I'm about to drink this stuff." So yeah everyone watch him because it was happening.

GUUUUUULP

Down went the potion, the minute it hit his tongue he fought to spit it back out. That burned, burned his tongue, his throat felt like it was on fire. He fought his face from making faces, but it wasn't going to stay calm looking it twisted and turned in pain.

BUUUUUUUUUUURRRRRRRRNNNNNNN

Forcing his hands in his robe pockets so he wouldn't clutch at his throat as the fire started going into his chest. Steam escaping from his ears and nose. He forced an evil style grin, though it looked like a twisted mess with the pain showing on his face as he opened his mouth to let the steam rush out. It needed to stop.. stop, but no it was still going down in his chest and to his stomach. He fidgeted a bit as it hit his stomach. He was feeling like he was burning from the inside out, but it was an odd pain. It hurt, but not a hurt that would make him double over.

Even though he wouldn't he wasn't a wimp and he couldn't act like one especially in the front of class, but his eyes locked on Alice.. ALICE DON'T DO IT DON'T DRINK IT. He didn't want to see pretty drink this.

Opening his mouth again, "See easy" Steam escaped and his voice sounded horse from pain.

ooohhh pain he then did take his hands and doubled over a bit, that hurt.

Pfffffffffffffffffft

He looked at everyone. Oops well that pain might not have been burning now was it.

Sniff sniff

"Whoa sorry about that" He waved the air around him. That was a stinker, that potion must have rotted him as well as burned him. He wondered if steam came out his bum when he did that. Did anyone see any steam because that would have been awesome.

He headed back to his seat still feeling the burning pain in his stomach.

Caleb was a bit nervous yes, but if you were breathing FIRE, it was only natural to expect it to be a bit uncomfortable! He wasn't afraid. He could handle it. They wouldn't be allowed to make a potion that was a real threat to their safety.

Caleb took a spoonful and, telling himself once again that he could do it, he gulped it down. Immediately he felt like his mouth was on fire, and as the potion trickled down his throat, he felt like someone had dropped a fireball down his throat. His eyes began to water and he coughed, his body involuntarily trying to cough it back up. Slowly it made it's way to his stomach though, and slowly the burning started to go away. His stomach was warm, like he'd just had an entire cup of tea in one gulp, but that was it. He smiled.

"Cool!" he exclaimed, and as he did so, STEAM came out of his mouth and his nose. Like a real dragon! "AWESOME!! SOOOO worth the burning!" he exclaimed with a chuckle as more steam came out of his nostrils. "And I--"

His last sentence was cut off by a giant belch.

BURRRRRRRRRPPPPPPPPPPP!

He blushed and looked at the professor.

"I am SO sorry," he muttered. OHMIGOSH embarrassing. "That was the potion guys, not me!" he told the glass before another small burp escaped his lips.

But even after Bart's looks and the little Newell's reaction, Alice was still going through with it. Standing at her seat and turning to Culloden, she grinned at him broadly as if to show him how fearless she was before drinking what she thought was a tablespoon from the mucus-less vial.

Good MERLIN, what made this HURT so MUCH?

Immediately, her mouth felt as if it was on fire, the feeling continuing all the way down her throat. A couple small coughs passed from her mouth involuntarily, but she was determined NOT to wince. The captain's body had other plans, though, so as she attempted to keep any signs of pain or suffering off her face, her expression was tainted with a bit of facial twitching.

At least the burning sensation was starting to fade. A bit after she'd drank it, a warmth settled in her stomach, and it was better. But Alice knew what part came next, and instead of trying to speak like Caleb, she kept her mouth clamped tightly shut and swallowed the belches threatening to escape her throat. She could almost hear gran telling her that burps weren't ladylike while she struggled to keep them down.

Through the fight, she smiled as widely- or as widely as one could with lips as pressed together as hers were- at the professor. See? Fine.

She didn't even register the smoke issuing from her nostrils. Dragon!Alice. Grrr.

Fern crossed her arms and watched Bart with a scowl as he walked to the front of the classroom. She hoped he cried like a sissy baby when he drank it. But as she watched Bart’s face distort with pain, Fern shifted uncomfortably in her seat, eyes widening in worry and darting between the Gryffindor and the professor. If it was really harmful, Professor Culloden wouldn’t have let any of the students volunteer. Then he doubled over, and Fern gasped, and then AND THEN HE FARTED.

The 12-year-old gagged and pinched her nose, and all concern disappeared from her face. This was why she did not like Bart. He was rude and disgusting!

The next boy was no better, and Fern swore she would never sit in the front again. But if she sat near the back, she’d have to sit near Bart, which would be just as bad. Maybe if she sat in the middle on the opposite side of the room that would be okay.

Finally it was a teenager’s turn, the one Fern thought she had heard the quidditch announcers say bit people. As the older girl stood there, smiling fiercely with smoke coming out of her nostrils, Fern decided that either the announcers had been wrong, or she was getting everything confused. Someone this cool could not possibly bite people. Maybe it had been a rumor started by some student who was jealous of the teenager.

Next was the Slytherin boy--oh, he should have asked his name!--and...

Buuuuuuuuuurp!

Cosgrach chuckled to himself. He LOVED this potion! "Sure wasn't," he called to the boy. Sure it wasn't him! And next came up Alice, and he almost held his breath--but the Gryffindor lady held her stance very well! She didn't even burp, and he could see why she wanted to demonstrate. He nodded at her. He was... impressed.

"Thank you, volunteers," he said as normally as he could--he still remembered the fart and burp, after all, and he walked to his desk to sit. He had been on his feet so far and he was 40 years old.

Sigh.

"Spare half of your potion for homework," he said to them, "and use half that should let you breathe fire for seven to ten minutes. Blow more fiercely if you want a fiercer fire, and vice-versa." He checked his watch. "We have fifteen minutes left of the class, so don't forget to clean after yourselves. Leave the fire crab shells on your desks, please." He, himself, was going to collect those.

And those still curious to experience drinking it? He wasn't going to stop them. He just wanted them to know it'd BURN, they'd STEAM and BURP.

Fern spooned the potion into two clean vials – one to use now in class, the other for later. Stoppering the vial she would use for her homework and setting it aside, Fern grabbed the un-stoppered one and looked around for someone to blow the fire on.

Ella was out of the question, because Fern knew she’d want to partner with Alec, and Fern never got in the way of true love. And – Fern wrinkled her nose – the day she asked Tora, Bart, or Cuthbert to be her partner would be the day she lost her mind and became an inpatient at St. Mungo’s. She would have asked Adi, but he was working with a teenage boy, and that was too intimidating. The Hufflepuff looked around the classroom, trying to find someone who would be nice and cool to be her partner, and that was when she heard a girl speak – a Hufflepuff! Fern vaguely remembered the girl being sorted at the Start-of-Term Feast, but she couldn’t remember the first year’s name.

“Hey!” Fern called, walking to the girl after giving a friendly wave. “Hey! My name’s Fern! I’ll be your partner!”
