The 12-year-old wanted to fling herself back on the ground, hide under the robes, and never, ever come out from under them ever. HER LIFE WAS RUINED! How could she go back to Hogwarts, let alone leave this store - LET ALONE LEAVE THE CHANGING ROOMS!? IT WOULD BE HOT PINK EVERYTHING FOR THE REST OF HER LIFE, AND THERE WAS NO WAY SHE COULD GO OUT IN PUBLIC EVER AGAIN! THE EMBARRASSMENT SHE WOULD FACE! THE HUMILIATION! THE SHAME!
She had no choice! Letting go of the kind witch's hand, Fern wobbled on her one wedge, gulped, and looked down at the robes on the floor like a pirate walking the plank looks at shark infested waters. Becoming Madame Malkin's Changing Room Hermit was the only option she could foresee that would involve the least amount of shame. If only - but then the woman spoke.
And what sweet words of wisdom she bestowed upon Fern. Everything she said was so true! Fern gasped - she had never thought about that! And oh! What if this woman hadn't appeared, and Fern had actually decided to go with the purple!? AND THEN BEEN FORCED TO WEAR BLACK AT SIXTEEN!? "I hate black!" the tween cried fervently; she had suffered through black school robes all last year, and she was not looking forward to wearing them for six more years.
Oh! Dark orchid! Fern gasped again, and for a moment she was completely still, transported away by the image of herself, walking down Diagon Alley in a sparkly dark orchid robe. All the girls would stew in their jealousy, and all the boys would sigh, and Forrest - Forrest would think, 'It's clear by the way she dresses that Fern is so mature! Way more maturer than Cuthbert! Why did I ever gossip behind her back with that gillyweed-brain-super-loser-meanie-face-jerk!?'
Breaking out of her reverie with a delighted grin, Fern was about to tell the witch that she thought dark orchid was the perfect signature color for her, but again she gasped, this time stopped in her tracks by the words 'We have robes in that colour if you want.' "WE!?" Fern exclaimed, "WE!? AS IN YOU WORK HERE!?" "THAT IS THE MOST AMAZING THING EVER!!" She hated black! GREAT! That brought a wide smile on Angelina's face, because it would be a shame if such a cute little girl liked black. The mere WORD was depressing. Her smile vanished soon, though, because she might think the assistant was mocking her, whereas Angelina understood her completely and was approaching the problem seriously.
She let her think it over as she studied her face closely for signs of what she thought. Hmm... she was grinning delightfully soon anyway, and it made Angelina smile in JOY, and it turned into a heartily laugh that echoed off the walls. "I do, yes!" she said in the BEST MOOD ever. She was so SO glad this little girl showed up here and brightened her day! "Thank you!" Hehe. She'd never thought working here would be a compliment or a great thing, but she could understand her reasons. That meant the girl would really get professional help. She would SEE to it. "So you're starting your second grade?" Wow. Important years. |
