Jordan followed his mother into the wand shop, caught between wanting to charge ahead and letting her take the lead. She was familiar with all of this, after all. He wasn't. Still, when it came time for the measurements, he wasn't given much choice about following: she put a hand on his back and nudged him forward, leaving him to the mercy of the floating tape while she wandered over to the lounge area.

Not that he would admit it, but he flinched a time or two when the measuring tape snapped itself taut. It made him wonder if measuring tapes got peevish; maybe this one felt that it had measured too many students today?

"You're doing a great job," he informed the measuring tape. It was normal to talk to enchanted objects, right?
