The Forest of Dean is one of the surviving Ancient Woodlands of England, having existed continuously for hundreds of years. The forest is composed of both deciduous and evergreen trees. Most of the trees are oak, beech, and chestnut. Other wand wood trees the observant might see include pine, spruce, fir, alder and larch, but today we are not looking for any of those. Rather we are looking for rowan trees, and in particular the magical wiggentree if you happen to be lucky enough to spot one.
The portkeys deposit the students in a large clearing somewhere in the Woorgreens Lake and Marsh reserve. In one direction, just through the trees, there is water, and back the other way, more forest.
Ira counted off the arrivals, matching them with their permission slips, and then once everyone had arrived he began to speak.
"Here in this box are supplies, maps, sacks, and flare stones. The flare stones are your rescue signals if you get into trouble. Just place it on the palm of your hand, tap it with your wand, and it will shoot up in the air and light up, allowing us to find you. One map per group, choose amongst yourselves who you'll be working with, older students please spread yourselves amongst the younger ones. You'll see on the map a highlighted area, this is the area where you can use your wand, we have a ministry permit for underage magic in this area only." Got that? Good.
"Your task is to collect one of the three cores we discussed, or a sample of rowan wandwood. Use your knowledge of creatures, herbology, runes, defense against the dark arts, potions, and whatever other school subjects you find applicable in order to obtain these materials. Each person should aim to collect one item, but if a group manages to collect one of each item, regardless of how many of you are in that group, they will win a prize. If there are any questions feel free to ask them, but otherwise go. You have 2 hours."
And he'd be right here waiting.

OOC: Hi guys! Its time for the field trip as per instructions given during the information part of the seminar. No permission slip = no field trip, no exceptions. If you don't want your character to go on the field trip that is fine, you shouldn't post them here though.
This is the second part of the Wandlore class, the first can be found here. If you are just joining in, you need to post in the seminar part, with your charrie's permission slip and wand information, and just say they're portkeying out to the forest as per the instructions in that thread. Other than that, general class rules apply and have fun! Feel free to nudge me with any questions.
Tasks:
-Find a group (at least two people, and up to as many as you like)
-At least 5 posts per person as the minimum.
- Have your character apply what they learned in the seminar, and what they know from other classes in their attempts to get a core or wood sample
- react to any.... surprises that might appear
- any group which manages to get all four items (dittany stalk, kelpie bulrushes, augury feather, rowan wood) will win a prize.
- if your character doesn't manage to get anything you can still earn points, so RP however you like as far as your character's abilities go, I trust you know what your charrie is capable of.
-team work gets bonuses
-have fun
-don't die

SPOILER!!: Seminar stuff from the other thread
Seminar progression: Post 1: Starting early, your character can still arrive. Please fill out the permission slip and the little wand questionnaire here in this first post if you're joining in. You'll be added to this list too! How many standard wand woods does Ollivanders use, and name some of them Post 2: Please fill out the permission slip and the little wand questionnaire here in this first post if you're joining in. Ira lists all the woods and cores used at Ollivanders and talks a bit about finding a balance between them, and the difficulty involved Any questions about woods and cores before moving on Post 3: Please fill out the permission slip and the little wand questionnaire here in this first post if you're joining in. Ira answers some questions then says some stuff. Its interesting but you don't have to read/listen. Also, guess which cores to harvest Guess the cores, and tell me why you think that is what you'll all be trying to harvest. Post 4: Please fill out the permission slip and the little wand questionnaire here in this first post if you're joining in. Ira hints here what the cores might be, and consider where in the world we are yes? Still guessing two of the cores, and tell me why you think that is what you'll all be trying to harvest.... one is guessed correctly: Dittany Stalk. Post 5: Please fill out the permission slip and the little wand questionnaire here in this first post if you're joining in. Tell us things about the three cores, it doesn't have to be much, anything is good depending what your character knows. All three guessed correctly:, Augurey Feather, Kelpie Bulrushes, Dittany Stalk. What do you know about Augureys, Kelpies, and Dittany? Post 6: Please fill out the permission slip and the little wand questionnaire here in this first post if you're joining in. There's a list of the three cores and their properties here, and Ira wants people to say stuff about Wiggentrees and harvesting wood for Runes For those of you who are familiar with the Study of Ancient Runes, you may have some idea of how one might best harvest wand wood, its similar to how you choose wood for making a rune set. Please, tell the class if you have any knowledge about this method of gathering magical wood, and if you don't know, then tell the class what you know about Rowan, and about Wiggentrees? Post 7: Please fill out the permission slip and the little wand questionnaire here in this first post if you're joining in.There is more information about Rowans/Wiggentrees, and about how to harvest the cores, and the wood in this post. Your charrie should probably take a few notes. Find a partner/small group and prepare for the portkey Post 8: Portkey! Make sure you read the previous post instructions too.
