His hands curled into a fist when he glanced at the covered animals, but he didn't scratch anywhere. Instead, he grabbed the one she indicated and tried to grin reassuringly. Well, at least she was communicating. That meant she didn't hate him or thought he was someone to be avoided. It lifted his spirits to think so, and he walked slightly ahead of her to the other end of the train.
"There's a luggage compartment," he said, not turning to face her. He didn't want to see the cages.
