Melanie felt tears prickling at her eyes. Nope. She wasn't going to cry. She couldn't. She had put herself in this situation and this was all her fault.
"I... you... I didn't mean to..." Melanie felt like her voice was tiny. She felt tiny. And above all, she felt horrible. "I... panicked and I didn't know what to say. And... I... I don't know, Landon. I don't know." Melanie didn't dare look up from the floor to look at Landon. If she did, she was pretty sure she would burst with unnecessary tears. She just focused on the flowers on her shoes and willed her vision to focus itself. Landon could see that Melanie was close to tears and he wanted to tell her not to cry and hug her but he couldn't allow himself too. He felt heartbroken and she lied to him. She lied.
"I just wish you would've told me that you didn't like me. We're supposed to be friends, Melanie. And...today, I was going to-I was hoping to...you were giving me all the signs and...I can't. I just can't now." He shook his head. He had it all planned on what to do but this was definitely not how he expected it to go, unfortunately.
