Alas! Dylan was
here.
Naturally when he'd selected the woods he'd be collecting, his research had went a bit further. How did one specify which trees were which? By their leaves, of course. He'd eyeballed those photos in the books closely. In fact, he brought the book along, just in case his memory decided to fail him. That happened sometimes...to the best people. So, the Captain wasn't ashamed.
Leaves, leaves,
leaves...
The particular leaves he was looking for were long like
frongs, with just as many 'fingers' hanging off of them...As he looked around, he didn't immediately see what he was looking for and walked further in...They'd be vividly green...really long and narrow...
It was a rare wood for a reason, of course. Dylan had been prepared to hunt for it...
Pulling the book out so to remind himself of the exact image, he continued on, glancing between the picture and low hanging branches ahead. The tree itself would be huge...as most yew trees were. The branches wouldn't be too low...Meaning he probably needed to actually look UP to find it. Right...that would help.
...and he wasn't disappointed. The moment he looked up, a yew tree was staring him right in the face.
DUR. Aren't you so smart, Dylan? "Hello, tree." Yes, he knew it couldn't talk back...but he couldn't help himself. Seemed rude NOT to say 'Hello'.
"Are you a living tree or a dead tree?" STARE.
Well, it had leaves that looked alive...and they weren't crumpled up and falling off. So, that had to be a good sign...Also, the bark looked rich and reinforced, not ashy and decaying.
"I'll take that as a yes."
