Gloves on, burin in hand and textbook open to the galdr chapter in front of him once again, Tobias glanced at his 'planning' parchment and quickly established which rune he was carving first. Though... he kind of already knew. Because he knew his name and that it started with T and that T was Tiewaz... YUP. SEE. HE WAS RIGHT.
Feeling kind of pleased he'd remembered it... AND what it looked like, Tobias set to finding the galdr he needed and wasted NO TIME in starting to carve and
sing chant it.
"Tiwaz tiwaz tiwaz... t i i i i i r r r r r..." Seriously what was that part even about it made no sense. But TOBY was NOT going to start questioning the RUNES 'cause it was Botros' subject and he liked Botros so yeeeahhhh...
"tu ta ti te ter tor, tur tar tir ter tor" He did sound like an idiot though.
"ot et it at ut... (Tyr Tyr), T i i i i i r r r r r." Wait, hadn't he already said that bit?
... Oh, it was done.
Maybe because he knew the rune and it was pretty simple and there were a few times where he paused, the run was pretty much already finished. He did need to finish off the last tiny line though and figured he should probably do the galdr again while he did, because he was being SUPER THOROUGH. Tobias of course finished the line before the galdr so he kind of pretended that he was still carving the run as he finished it so he didn't look like a prized pillock sitting there singing and not carving.
RIGHT. NEXT. OTHALA.
This one looked kinda easy enough to carve too. Tobias was totally glad they WERE all straight lines. It did make sense, after all. But yes. Galdr time.
"Othala othal othal... o o o o o o o o o... o o o o o o..." Tobias was starting to get slightly suspicious that maybe these song things were mainly to make the lesson fun. Like at everyone's expense. Because Toby sure was finding it ridiculous to hear a whole class full of people chanting vowels and weird words. Hm. BUT IT WAS MAGIC AND IT WORKED SO IT DIDN't MATTER YAY.
"Othul othal othil othel othol... othol othel othil othal othul... o o o o o o."
Well that seemed done. As Tobias looked at the galdr for the next on and prepared to carve it too, he wondered vaguely how the galdr was magic. Toby supposed you could ask that about all magic, but really with usual magic unless you were super powerful you needed a wand. So was the magic with THIS coming from the rune being carved or the song thing? Or both? It was kind of fascinating.
Anyway, next was the B one which was easy to remember because it looked JUST like a B. Okay, next one... Berkana? Berkano? ... Well, the B rune anyway. And this galdr seemed slightly longer than the others so far; if he kind of slowed down he could probably get it in one run through.
"Berkano berkano berkano, bu ba bi be bo... b e e e e e r r r r r-" teeny giggle here because Tobias hadn't said something that wasn't nonsense in AGES.
"(burk bark birk berk bork)" now he sounded like a doggy
"ob eb ib ab ub... b e e e e e r r r r r."
All this concentrating had Toby's eyes stinging and his concentration wandering, so he didn't waste much time before moving on to the next rune; sooner he was done, the sooner he could sit and... well that was it.
Dead easy one here. It was barely any lines.
"Eihwaz eihwaz eihwaz... (iwaz iwaz iwaz)...e e e e e e e e e-" wait what was that? A neutral closed vowel sound? Did that mean he had to decide what went there? Tobias paused for a moment, trying to think if he'd heard anyone else have to do this one, but everyone was working at the same time so it was hard to tell, so in the end he just... left that little bit. It could be nothing.
"Iwu iwa iwi iwa iwu... iwo iwe iwi iwa iwu... e e e e e e e e e."
THAT WOULD JUST HAVE TO DO.
Ansuz again... that shouldn't be too hard, since Tobias already had tried that rune with the practice one. Now he could even remember the amount of aws he needed, so it should be eeeeeeeasy.
"Ansuz ansuz ansuz..." here goes...
"aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw s s s s s s aw aw aw aw aw aw" BREEEEEEATHE
"aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw."
SEE? Easy. This one was actually glowing kinda brighter than the first try with it... and the other runes he'd done on that piece of wood. So wait... only one rune left? WICKED.
Sowilo. Okay. Looked a bit fiddly but achievable nonetheless. Burin ready, AAAAAAAAAAAND...
"Sowilo sowilo sowilo... s s s s s s s s s, s s s o o o l l l... su sa si se so (sul sal sil sel sol) us as is es os... si se su sa su... s s s s s s s s s."
Toby was DONE. Okay so the further he'd got, the more tired he was and the more likely it was that he'd have made a mistake, but he was still SUPER enthusiastic about this activity and learning how to translate sentences into runes. Tobias blew the excess wood shavings from the desktop and then put the parchment on top of it. He didn't even have to get up to reach Ella's desk; he was able to reach it and place his rune stuff on there by streeeeeetching... slightly trecherous though... he was still small enough that a centimeter or so further and he'd be on the floor.
But Tobias didn't say anything, just left it on Ella's desk and went back to sitting at his own, a smile on his face 'cause he was super clever and GOOD at RUNES.
