Especially after she suddenly stood up like that.
Her words hit him like the asteroid that cause the extinction of the dinosaurs. BAM BOOM WOW. The astronomer was speechless and had he not been socially awkward (not to mention he was pretty sure she did not want one) he would have given the young lady a hug.
A lot of what she said hit very close to home for him as well. Not that he was going to cry about it, however. Ice cream seemed to take away the desire to do so. "It is always the hardest when we disappoint ourselves," he nodded, his lips forming the tiniest of frowns. He could not share in her house dreams. His entire family had been Gryffindors, so he could only imagine what it would have felt like to have been sorted into Hufflepuff. He was still convinced that that was where the groundskeeper should have been put. So yes, Miss Wisteria, he understood and could entertain the thought of the Sorting Hat making a mistake.
"It hurts us most when we put all our energy, heart, and effort into something and believe, full heartedly, we can achieve it. Disappointment is a sort of the black hole of the universe. A black hole of a soul that expends too much in hope and expectation only to have all the light sucked in so that it cannot escape," he said, momentarily forgetting to pop another spoonful of ice cream into his mouth. Of course he was still speaking in regards to Miss Wisteria's words, but his thoughts were also wandering into his own personal life. His own dreams that would never come true.
"You are correct, Miss Wisteria. We do not always know why we do not get what we want. What we have worked towards. However, each disenchantment, whether it is a minor disappointment or a major shock, is the signal that things are moving into transition in our lives. While your sorting went in an unfavorable direction for you, what bad REALLY has come from it? You said so yourself that your family is no less proud of you. You have made many friends, a best friend, and are an outstanding student. So you don't get to wear green and silver robes," he said while waving his hand dramatically and making a loud SCOFFing noise. "You are still growing into becoming an outstanding witch. And a loyal one at that." And wasn't that much more important than what an old hat told you?
Should he have stood up for that speech? Probably so considering that she had stood during her's. But it was too late now and standing would just be awkward and....Yep, more ice cream into the mouth now.
"Did you really?" he asked with a chuckle. "What gave it away?" Was it Pebbles?
Yes, we know we probably shouldn't have made you relate to this, Professor, but we don't know many people we could openly discuss this thing with. And you seem to help, so, yeah.
Since she was done talking, then Lottie kept her eyes on the man, except on those few occasions she ate some ice cream and her eyes turned to the bowl in front of her. But for the time being, they were on Airey. Go on, the floor is yours.
It was rather wonderful that she was able to LISTEN to everything Airey had to say, it was one of the few Professors she actually listened to. And, well, Hadley and Botros too. Ivy Knox, while not a Professor, was someone others ought to listen to, BUT...*mellow* He was bringing this whole black hole conversation again. Weren't they over that? Did he not understand how incredibly depressed...oh, ice cream! It was a great distraction from the whole black hole scenario in life.
'You are correct, Miss Wisteria'. Why, of course. She perked up at this and kept on listening. And then she sighed. Airey was kind of right. Nothing truly bad has come from it, other than her not fulfilling her dream or aspirations or something of the like. And it was true, her parents were still proud of how her education was going, they were totally okay with that. Though, she did EYE the gesture about the robes, it had meant a lot to her, soooo be careful, Airey. "You're right, though," she started to say, slowly losing her smile, but keeping a slightly upbeat tone, "Nothing bad has come from it, I think, I guess I just felt there was something wrong with me." THIS. An entire family of Slytherins. And one Hufflepuff. TWO, but she doesn't know yet. Clearly, she was bound to think she was the odd one, and not in the good way, however, she was accepting of this.
Sure, many friends. Alec is the only one who was a friend and a Hufflepuff, the only one. Let's face it, Oakey didn't actually count, he was sought out for smoothies. And he knows it. The rest belong in the other three Houses. But this didn't bother her.
Unfavorable direction, Sorting Hat, you suck. BUT..., "Thank you." And she smiled again. You know, the words 'outstanding student' were actually nice to hear.
More ice cream.
And, then her eyes landed on the PINK pillow on his desk. "Well, there aren't many Professors who take interest in rocks. So, yes, Pebbles gave you away." BEAM. |
