Well...I hope this is okay enough for you." She glanced down at her own tea, which she thought was quite delightful. "That must be sort of a drag to have to drink things you don't like for a class all the time. What do you like to drink?" She wasn't sure she'd ever really asked him before. Though she had noticed him drinking some coffee at the Ravenclaw table in the mornings before. She wasn't much for coffee though - in fact she thought it was pretty gross.
She peeked from her own cup for a second when she heard Ethan cast a spell. Well that must be to heat his tea since he didn't come here with any hot water, right? She didn't know the spell, but it seemed really useful. "Wow, that's a neat one! I don't know if I've tried that yet. Is it hard?" she said, nodding to his circular motion around his cup. It seemed like a staple spell, heating water, so she didn't know why she hadn't thought to learn it sooner. Sometimes she just got stuck in her muggle routines since her neighbors were always so close by.
She looked on, intrigued with Ethan's tea reading. She felt pretty privileged that he was sharing something so personal with her. Like it was a secret she was allowed to know or something. That was, if, his reading was accurate. "Oh yeah, I do see the candle. That's interesting." She followed his gaze and laughed a little at the unicorn spotting. "Yeah either a unicorn or a one horned goat," she said with a chuckle and flashed a sidelong look at him. The one on the bottom was harder to make out. "Yeah...it could really be either, couldn't it. Or maybe it's a lump of coal," she teased again. Christmas was coming, as everyone knew, and she just couldn't help the cheesy humor every now and again.
She tipped her cup towards him so he could have a look as well and explained what she found. "Well," she began, "First I noticed the flower on the rim, see? I thought it was a lily but I only see 'flower' in the book," she said as she flipped the page open. "Then in the middle, I saw a rabbit." She wondered if he could see it too. But maybe if he had been looking for shapes, he would see something completely different - if this whole tessomancy thing was anywhere near useful anyway. "And then on the base, it looked like there was a bird. Those looked like wings...there," she pointed to help him see where she was looking.
"I still am not totally sold on this...but maybe it can be true sometimes. But that's the trouble isn't it? If things are only true sometimes, then they're false the rest of the time. It's almost like lying by omission if you think about it...kind of." She shrugged and raised her eyebrows at her cup. Maybe it worked, maybe it didn't, but it was still fun to do. After this hot tea, she was feeling the need for some sugar. Usually she'd put it in her cup but since she couldn't...she'd just have to get something sweet afterwards to make up for it.
Eliza looked up her meanings of the symbols she saw and found that the bird meant there would be good news or good luck in the future. She read some of it aloud to Ethan, in the spirit of sharing and good friend type things that she was sure people did, right? "Looks like the bird could mean good luck in my future, so that sounds good." Well that sort of makes sense, because the base of the cup is where the future and ultimate answer is…so I will ultimately have good luck? But what does that mean? Will I get to play in a match and score a point or something? The possibilities to “good luck” were endless, but she supposed she couldn’t expect too much, since she hadn’t thought of a very direct question.
She read further, "And the middle symbol, the rabbit, is about getting over being shy and also about taking care of yourself. She felt her face get a little hot at the description and felt slightly embarrassed. If this was true, did that mean she’d been overly shy and needy around people? She hoped not. She didn’t want to be a bother and really didn’t want to annoy anyone by needing too much help or being too uninteresting. She just kept a lot of her thoughts to herself, and maybe she was a little shy, but that didn’t mean she didn’t want to talk to people. She liked people a lot actually. "Erm...oh." She squinted up through her hair at Ethan and wondered what he thought about that, the question plain on her face. But she wouldn't ask outright. Not now that she was worried she might be overly dependent on him. And this was sort of just proving that point.
She twisted her hair between her fingers and flipped to the next symbol. "Well at least this one sounds a bit better…" she said as she read the description. "So a flower is a good thing because it means good things are happening. And that’s true, because the rim means right now…and I am in a pretty good mood today. Especially since I get to see you a little, so yeah, I’d say that’s right." She blushed a little at saying aloud what she'd meant to only think to herself, but she'd lost herself in her thoughts and forgot her mouth was moving. She tried to ignore it though and read further. "And dreams will come true? Well that’s a lot to expect for the present today, isn’t it?" She wasn’t sure about the last part, but who knew, maybe something big would happen today. She copied down her findings in her notebook so she could look it over again later.
Well after that little soul searching session, she was feeling like an open book, a somewhat uncomfortable open book, but she knew Ethan was a good friend and wouldn't really judge her by her reading too much. Even if some of it was true. "Erm, so...what do your symbols mean?" She hoped his would be accurate too so she wasn't the only one feeling on display anymore.
Ethan looked up from his cup and smiled at Eliza.
"No.. this is great," he said, inclining his cup slightly towards her.
"I like tea sometimes.. I just prefer coffee, espresso actually." His morning ritual.. he wasn't sure he could function without his daily caffeine. He shrugged a little.
"I wouldn't mind if the tea they had gotten for class was halfway decent. That was the worst cup of tea I had ever had.. so I'm really grateful you brought some of your own." He grinned at her, hoping there were no leaves stuck in his teeth or anything.
Pulling his textbook from his bag, he began flipping through to the appropriate section then looked up at the question.
"Oh, that heating charm? No.. it's a relatively simple spell.. You haven't learned it yet?" He was a bit surprised, hadn't they used it in class previously? But maybe not..
"You just run your wand around the rim and the incantation is Chaudensis.. you should try it on your next reading." Useful spell, that one was..
He glanced up at Eliza as she looked into his cup and confirmed his findings. Good.. he wasn't completely crazy and making things up. Heh.. one-horned goat.. he chuckled a little.
"Lump of coal?" he glanced back into his cup, not getting the reference, and shrugged.
"Yeah, I suppose it could be that too.. I guess I'll just go with my initial thought then if it could be any of them.. a closed fist." He wondered what that would mean and if he would like the meaning better than any of the others..
He looked up at her, then peered into her cup as the younger Claw began assessing her leaves. Oh, it did look like a lily, he thought with a smile. Maybe a stargazer.. Anyway..
"Yeah.. I can definitely see all those," he said with a nod, then he tilted his head slightly as he thought over her words about Tessomancy in general.
"Well.." he began after a moment's thought.
"I think they can be true.. but maybe not always in the way that we're looking for. Like, perhaps it's not as literal as we think and we have to dig deeper to find its meaning and how it really relates to our life or path.." Of course, that was just his opinion on Divination in general.. who knew if he was right or way off the mark?
Then he leaned back a little, listening thoughtfully as Eliza presented her findings and interpretations.
"Good luck in the future is always a good thing, yeah?" He grinned a little then continued listening. Getting over being shy..? Hmm.. he hadn't really thought of Eliza as a shy person, but maybe it was situational. He tilted his head and gave her a curious look as she seemed to be looking at him strangely. Maybe she was wondering what he thought of her symbol?
"So, maybe it doesn't exactly mean that your overall personality is shy because that's never the impression that I got of you," he started with a small grin.
"It could mean more about a situation you are reluctant to be in or do something in.. and that you need to work to overcome that.. does that seem at all relevant?" He looked at her questioningly before she continued with her third symbol.
The flower meant good things.. He grinned, then chuckled a little at her theory of its meaning.
"It's always a good thing to hang out with a friend, yeah?" And the good mood was great.. so it seemed pretty spot on.
"Maybe more good things to come today, too.." he added with a raised brow. The entire day would be considered the present, right? And dreams to come true.. He shrugged a little.
"The day's not over.. maybe something you've been thinking about will come to fruition.. even if it's something minor.. What had you been meditating on when you drank your tea, if you don't mind me asking?"
Okay.. so now it was his turn.
"Alright, my first symbol near the rim which would be the present reading, I thought looked like a candle." He turned to that symbol in the book and his green eyes skimmed the passage.
"It says that a lit candle represents faith and motivation." He thought for a moment, then shrugged.
"I had been thinking about Quidditch so maybe that is related to faith in my new position and a motivation for the season to start?" He chuckled a little bit. Obviously Elise had some sort of faith in him or else she wouldn't have had him replace Dustin.
"So, I think we decided this one here in the middle was a unicorn," he said with a chuckle and he flipped to that page, reading the meaning.
"Apparently I have psychic powers," he finally said, chuckling a bit more.
"Not really sure what that has to do with Quidditch or what might happen in two weeks.. What do you think?" Christmas was in two weeks, perhaps he would successfully predict what kind of gift he would get and maybe it would relate to an upcoming game.. he didn't know. Maybe that one would remain to present itself in its own time.
"Next, I settled on a fist as a symbol.." It was what he thought of first and he was fairly certain first impressions counted here.
"The book says a closed hand relates to an argument or disagreement," he said with the hint of a frown. So how would that relate to Quidditch in the future? Hopefully not a disagreement with one of his teammates.. he hated arguments.. Maybe there would be some sort of dispute over the cup?
"So.. what do you think?" he asked Eliza, looking up, just wondering for a general impression about his entire reading. It was always good to get more than one view on these sorts of things, he thought.
