To be honest, he couldn't even man up and actually face Gwen. Not once did he try to look at her in the eye, afraid that he might change his mind and give in once he does.
'I don't know what I want.' No. You have chosen, Zeke. Stand by your decision. You can't afford to hurt anyone ever again, and this is the best path to take. That was what he thought, at least.
His jaws were clenched as tight as his fists were. His uneven breathing also gave him away somehow. He was doing his best to seem nonchalant. To look like this was easy. To appear stone-hearted. That way she'd accept it more willingly. Before the expected tears could escape upon hearing the last words she'd said, he closed his eyes, took a deep breath, bit his lip, and did his best to muster up a smile. "Good-bye, Gwen." He opted not to answer her question....or else things would drag on longer, which was far from what Zeke wanted.
With that, he patted her shoulder, half-smiled, turned around, and walked away without another word.
It had taken her no less than four years to finally say an
‘I love you’ and look at the consequences. Whoever said that love was great was CLEARLY DELUSIONAL.
As she drew her attention back to the Gryffindor, the seventh year noticed that he wasn’t looking at her. Really now- was Zeke that mad that he couldn’t even not look in another direction while he was talking to her? At first, when hearing that
‘I’m sorry’, Gwen was beginning to feel a bit better. Just a bit. But then she thought it was probably just one of those things people were supposed to say, even without meaning it.
Whatever. ‘So this is it?’ She didn’t really expect an answer. It was just that...
‘You could have told me this before and not change your mind after a few days’ He could have just ignored what she had told him at the lake. He was not obliged to answer something. Because it was impossible to just decide you hate someone because of what... time management?
Gwen turned her head to look back at the courtyard, trying to hide the tear that was visible in the corner of her eye.
This is just silly. You have more important things to focus on. Like NEWTs and sending applications to universities. But as much as she was trying to convince herself to leave it like this, she just couldn’t. Pft. Who would have thought that Gwendolyn Greene, the person who hated these sentimental things would ever be in this mood?
And the next thing he said made her feel even worse.
Good-bye. Ugh. That sounded awful. Almost as bad as
‘we need to talk’. Gwen didn’t reply anything, instead, she started walking away in the opposite direction.
