"A banana split? Heh. Split a split.. good one." Paulie kept his eyes trained on the menu still, even though he could feel her bright and happy eyes on him. "Speaking of splits..." Now he chanced a look at her.
"Uh, so.. ya know." Air force, start with the RAF. At least he could BLAME it on that, right? Yes? ...No... not really. Maybe somewhat. He finally took a breath and looked at her again. For a little longer, at least. Then, the words spilled out like word-vomit. "So, the air force is gonna fund all my tuition if I go to university, and I thought I might as well go, and so there's one in America that I wanted to go to, and they accepted me, and-" He stopped short for a second. "I'm gonna go." He neglected to mention that the university was UCLA.
The anxiousness coursed in him. And he wasn't even done yet. What was she going to do? Was she going to be super mad or super sad? Or both? Neither were good, but he'd somehow prefer mad if he had to choose. ..If this was the right thing, how come it hurt so much?
At least his next words slowed to a more normal rate of speed.
"And I think.." Paulie swallowed. "Even if it's really hard right now, I think it'll be easier on us when we're apart if we.. split up." It was a good one, right? Then why didn't Paulie seem to be the least bit amused? The ginger princess' grin and bubbly charm seemed to be fading the longer they sat here and the more he looked at the menu instead of at her.
Something suddenly felt very, very wrong about this meeting. Tori tried to quell the sudden bubble of fear that popped up in the base of her tummy. She tried to keep the focus on him as he spewed out a really long sentence about the air force and tuition and uni and America? A school in America? Um he couldn't really want to go there, right, because he knew how she felt about America and it was like, way too far to travel every day by portkey...
Tori's hazel eyes started to narrow, not with anger for once, but with anxiety. The fearful feeling grew and grew until it seemed to be coming up her esophagus, into her mouth, choking the air out of her nostrils, out of the whole room. Split up? Split up? Them? They? Fostbury? Split? What did he mean by that? What could he possibly mean by that?
And why?
Tori had no words, at first, to counter those terrible ones that Paulie had just slapped her with. She sat there looking like she was choking or dying or just not breathing, because that's what it felt like. Like an elephant had just sat on her face and sucked all the air out of her lungs.
"Noo... Paulie, nnno..." she choked on the last word and shook her head violently, leaning forward so he could see how she felt about this. "No. We can work this out. We can make it work. We can... I can p-pay your tuition..." Her crushed face was pleading him to change his mind. "Nooo please."
