From what he could remember, he only ever stared at her...despite how creepy that sounded. Perhaps Christopher seemed to flirt too much and a lot of his friends were girls, but that didn't mean anything at all. He spent all of his time with Elise, didn't that matter?
He was very close to fuming at this point, but couldn't do anything but wait for her response. And when he heard what she had to say, he found himself wishing to take back what he had said...or at least HOW he said it. Chris clenched his jaw, but only for a second, as his anger disappeared and he grew immensely concerned at the sound of her voice. She was crying, or at least on the verge of tears, and he had no idea if it was because he had lost his patience or because she had lost hers.
Standing there, watching her, looking for the right words to say, he realized that he had never fully thought out how he was going to tell her, but whatever he had imagined never looked anything like this. With Tiffany and Minnie, it had all come so easy. He'd say something about how pretty they were, they'd kiss him, and voila, they were together. Couldn't it just be that easy again? He'd say he loved her and she'd kiss him this time, because it never seemed to work out for him the other way, and they'd live happily ever after, or something? The Awesomesauces.
"When did I say that?" Never once had he ever called her a liar. He didn't think she was lying about anything, except maybe the practice because she was still standing there with him, despite maybe being late. He just didn't understand how she could still be so clueless, after all this time. "Ineversaidthat..."
Chris stared down at his feet, no longer able to see her looking so upset. This was all his fault, and maybe things would have been easier for them to stay as friends...but how would he explain the reason he constantly got jealous when Elise spoke with/was with guys like Ethan or anyone else? True, he was nice and he had a girlfriend, but that didn't mean much to Christopher.
"You just...you aren't listening to what I'm trying to tell you." He ran his hands through his hair, completely messing it up as he always did when he was stressed out. All he wanted was to tell her it was her. She was the one he wanted to be with.
The level of frustration in that treehouse couldn't possibly get any higher than it was right then, with the both of them threatening to explode with the slightest pressure. Him into full out anger to the point that he might start flinging things around or her getting too frustrated that she'd just burst into sobs again.
When did he say it? Sweet Mother of Merlin, he was either extremely forgetful or just unable to control himself. Probably a mixture of the two, she decided, taking a deep breath to calm herself before attempting to look up. It didn't seem to work. He... didn't say it? "You just did!" she exclaimed, her fingers finding their way into her hair and massaging her temples slowly. Accusing her of lying and not even remembering himself do it.
She should have left earlier, while she still had the chance. The choice between her head and her heart should have been easier and she should have chosen her head right from the beginning. See what listening to her heart had done? It was destroying her and Chris' friendship and if that was all she was going to be she was going to take care of it, make sure that it didn't crumble down to the ground like a house of cards.
And now he was claiming that she wasn't listening. What listening was there to do when he hadn't said a thing to her about it other than the fact that it was someone she knew really well and wasn't Kat. Maybe even Beezus or Elliot, since he seemed to at least know the latter quite well. She'd have to try, though, and listen to whatever heart-wrenching news he had for her.
No matter how heart-wrenching the things he was saying were, she was just going to have to live with it.
"What are you trying to tell me, Chris?" she asked quietly, finally bringing herself to meet his eyes and taking a deep breath. Watching him run his hands through his hair made her want to do nothing but just pull him towards her and kiss him but that just wasn't possible. There was a girl that meant a lot to him, remember?
"Who is sh-" she started, actually moving towards him against her will and tripping over a loose floorboard. Falling forwards and trying desperately to grab whatever it was around her to steady herself and keep from hitting the wooden ground.
